  1. If not too trashy I’d be running the GPX with 18” round mono coil and digging everything. There is nothing magic about detecting tailing piles with a VLF. Either no discrimination and dig everything, or minimal ferrous rejection. Looking for nuggets so Park 2 a good place to start, see https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/6799-equinox-800-gold-nugget-detecting-tips/ for possible settings. I’d be using the 15” coil with steveg rod and balance kit. Check out my Steve’s Journal and tales about Ganes Creek, Moore Creek, and Fortymile country (Jack Wade, etc), plus 2013 and 2014 adventures.
  2. Yes. Same target id range and almost identical numbers on targets. The tones sound similar but keep in mind the Vanquish 44 is three tones max.
  3. That’s why I wanted you to see the video.... far clearer to see it than read about it. Sorry to hear your unit has an issue, but that’s why we have warranties and Garrett’s service is top notch.
  4. Well, it’s available now, MSRP $449 and internet price of $399 with free shipping. I guess it barely squeaks into under $400 category now.
  5. The “new” Bounty Hunter Time Ranger Pro is a F19 and at $399 I figure that puts all F19 detectors in this under $400 category now. Anyone paying more for another variant at this point is.... just paying more. Though getting it with a different preferred coil may still make that a better option. For what it’s worth, in my ferrous and hot rock separation testing the FT 19 kHz machines are top performance. It’s all about using the right coil. A F19 with a NEL Snake will equal or beat other top performers, which often are forced to run larger coils. Some may say that’s cheating... I say use what works best and if a F19 with a Snake outperforms a DEUS with a larger coil then that’s the way I roll. I’m not much into being “fair” when it comes to performance. I disagree about any of the FT 19 kHz units and EMI susceptibility. They are some of the best VLFs I’ve ever used in EMI regardless of coil. Really off subject though.... this thread is about the Vanquish and small coil, and where comparisons really do go astray is bringing the Equinox into the discussion. The Equinox is simply way more expensive and darn well better outperform a Vanquish, though the performance for many applications is near equal. There does appear to be a disparity of views on how well it does in dense trash.
  6. See the first couple minutes of this video. If it has never worked for you, then you may have an issue that Garrett needs to fix.
  7. Thread split and renamed. Use “start new topic” on the forum page to start new thread. Or use the “create” button at the top of every page.
  8. From Wikipedia “By the 1840s, Indian peace medals had come to be known as a "presidential series" for which there was growing interest. The federal mint in Philadelphia started collecting dies for the previously issued medals. This began the practice of striking bronze replicas of medals for presentation to government officials or historical societies. Production of the bronze medals began in 1842 with the Jefferson medal. The dies of the Washington and John Adams medals were missing during initial production, however. The John Adams die was not collected until 1878, and the George Washington die was ultimately reproduced in 1903, completing the series.” Restruck in 2007
  9. I’d be getting the coil for a 24K and I doubt you are saying you are using a Hot Foot on a Goldmaster 24K? Presumably you are using it in some other machine like the GMT. At a minimum you would need to change the plug since 24K/GMK coils are not plug compatible with the GMT and earlier Goldmaster coils. But maybe you have done that, and if so it would be interesting to hear about it and how well it’s working. I would think there is a high probability of the Hot Foot overloading at higher gain levels if employed on the 24K or GMK. I would not hold your breath for a review. I’m in no hurry to get the coil and have no idea when I would get around to using it. Since I have the 6” concentric which would be my preference anyway this is just a whim purchase. It would take just the right circumstances for me to actually use it, like deep, crevice and pocket riddled bedrock or some extreme mineral ground. The bottom line is when I have a detector I have kind of a knee jerk thing about getting the available coils that go with it.
  10. Do you want depth or discrimination? For depth I'd be using a GPX 5000 with an 18" round mono coil. Discrimination I'd be using a Equinox with 12" x 15" coil or Gold Racer/Gold Kruzer with 13" x 15.5" coil. Just my choices... there are many others that would work also.
  11. You get 5 free articles per month so you’ve been there, done that already. Using a new browser or device usually gets you another 5.
  12. Yay, good for you! I do believe I will round one up for myself.
  13. These will blow your mind.... https://www.christies.com/features/A-collectors-guide-to-meteorites-8231-1.aspx?sc_lang=en https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/14/arts/meteorites-collectors-auction-christies.html?
  14. I personally don't care if the Vanquish is waterproof or not. It is what it is and it's great for what it is. Like Simon I've used plenty of detectors in the rain that were supposedly not rain proof and never had an issue.
  15. The TDI SL is a very light weight, inexpensive "old school" ground balancing pulse induction metal detector. The design is derived from the earliest Eric Foster pulse designs. As such the machine simply is not as sensitive to tiny stuff as a hot VLF or a modern PI detector. That does not make it a "rotten" detector anymore than a two-box cache hunting detector is "rotten" for prospecting. It is a matter of knowing your tools and using them for their best application. Trying to stuff a square peg in a round hole is an operator error and no fault of the tool. That said it honestly is an older design and if you have the money there are better PI options. Using a TDI SL in a location hunted by the last several generations of later PI detectors is an exercise in futility. Personally I think the Goldmaster 24k will be a far better value for most people than a TDI SL.
  16. The TDI Hi-Q is nothing more than a White’s TDI SL with a different coil. The TDI SL came out in 2011 and so there are hundreds of threads here and elsewhere that have been made about it over the years. https://www.detectorprospector.com/tags/whites tdi/ More from Google
  17. I have to admit this has been bugging me.... Waterproof up to 1 meter... wow, the coil is waterproof. Water Resistant “with included rain cover?” So not water resistant without? Seriously? In this day and age? My 40 year old detectors were also “water resistant” when I put a bag over them. It appears to me the folks in marketing were pushing it a bit on this one.
  18. It’s great to see more people taking a shot at threads that both entertain and inform. Thanks for posting flak, great job!
  19. Equinox and Electrical Interference (EMI) Short Bursts Of Intense Static Or Interference
  20. If in sand or or other loose material I use a plastic nugget scoop. The White’s TRX is probably the hottest normal pinpointer for small stuff this side of the Falcon MD20.
  21. https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/11875-how-much-better-is-the-minelab-equinox-800-than-the-little-600-or-is-it-not-to-be-or-not-to-be/page/2/?tab=comments#comment-119118 "The 800 has the Gold Mode which is specifically designed for finding the tiniest gold. If you were into micro jewelry maybe that would be of interest. For normal rings and such, not so much. In general most jewerly hunters will do just as well with a 600."
  22. Nugget detecting and coin detecting are two different things. Serious nugget hunters value power and dig all targets including the trash. Coin hunters generally give up some depth to dig less trash by using discrimination. So the GPX 5000 you sold was more powerful but required digging everything. The XP DEUS will get less depth but will allow you to eliminate most ferrous trash. As far as settings I would use the factory recommended settings to start with until you are more familiar with the detector. I'm sure others will chime in with more detailed suggestions. I'll probably move this post to the XP forum once replies dwindle here for more possible responses.
