I was born in the Territory of Alaska in 1957 and lived in Alaska most of my life. I got started prospecting in the early 70s and purchased my first metal detector in 1972, a White's Coinmaster 4. I have been at it ever since prospecting, highbanking, dredging, and metal detecting for gold. I suction dredged for gold in Alaska for decades and am considered somewhat of an expert on the subject. I eventually acquired a large placer and hardrock property at Moore Creek, Alaska and have had many claims at other locations in the state. I have lately expanded outside Alaska with trips to Nevada, Arizona, California, the UK and Australia. My new home base is Reno, Nevada. I have interest in more than just gold, with copper, silver, platinum, and even meteorites on my list of things to prospect for. I like to look for anything that can be found with a metal detector: jewelry, coins, relics, and more.
I co-founded a dealership in 1976 that became one of the largest multi-line suppliers of prospecting and metal detecting equipment in the country. Even though I am now retired from the business and am full-time prospecting, writing and working on my website, I was immersed daily in the business for nearly 40 years. In that time I helped countless people with prospecting and metal detecting questions. I enjoyed it and so this website lets me continue to do something I enjoy. I want to be very clear on one thing however. I test all my equipment, detectors included, on my targets, in my conditions, for my own purposes. I am willing to share what I have learned, but I am not out to sway anyone on anything. I am brand agnostic - all I care about is what works for me. You can rest assured I am not out to sell anyone on any particular brand or model. At the end of the day I think nearly all the detectors on the market serve a task well for somebody or they do not last long. You just have to find what works for you and I am willing to help do that if you wish.
Some detectors I have used:
