  1. 5 tone and dig it all, especially iron grunts that are deep in the wet sand. It's amazing how many targets clear up once I take a scoop of sand off the top. I keep my tones the same whether it is dirt, dry sand or wet sand so my ears are always tuned to the same sounds. Always hunt in AM as well.
  2. Haha! Here I was thinking that I was the only one who owned their own Amazon van. I hope you get your Deus II soon and any other item you wish! I look forward to seeing the treasure you uncover with it. It sounds like you have a Proverbs 31 wife. You are blessed as am I with one.
  3. This may seem extreme in terms of an analogy but as I get older the reality of things becomes much clearer. My uncle bought a house in Big Bear 20 years ago to eventually retire to. Every year was going to be the last year to work and then he finally was going to have enough money to retire and move to his cabin home. 17 years later he was still not retired and was diagnosed with lung cancer and 4 months later he passed. He never got to live in his cabin he loved so much because he never felt he had enough. When I see people losing perspective today I always point them out to my kids (who are 30 and 24) and tell them not to be their uncle Jim. Metal Detecting is a hobby and hobbies are supposed to be fun. Every detector I have ever bought has been resold with little to no loss on my investment. The fun in new machines is the anticipation that this time I'm really going to clean up and find that ring, chain, or ancient silver coin. I'm buying a new Deus II as soon as someone says it's my turn on the list and if the legend turns out to be the next great thing I'll buy it too. Just don't tell my wife.
  4. I think the Deus II was created to be the best new detector for the professional all around treasure hunter who uses a metal detector. I think the Legend was created to be an alternative to the Equinox 800. People will buy the Deus II because they want the opportunity to up their game over what they have now. The Legend will be bought because folks who have a 600 or a Vanquish want an upgrade at a price they can afford. Having a legend and an 800 seems redundant to me. It'll be interesting to see in 6-9 months where things stand.
  5. He could believe in the tooth fairy and I would still watch all of his videos on the Deus platforms.
  6. At one point I owned around 12-15 detectors at the same time. The excuse was always I wanted an extra one in case a friend wanted to go detecting. I told this to my wife and there was a time I began to believe the lie as well and then I decided enough was enough and I began to thin things out to the point I got down to an 800 and a 600. I just sold the 600 and will replace it with a Deus II so I'll just have the two detectors going forward. As I get closer to retiring from the classroom and we move out of CA, I look at everything under the idea of do I really want to move this. It's amazing what you can learn to live without. I still have 4 sand scoops though. You never know when you'll need an extra scoop.
  7. Man that sucks. I have the utmost respect for those that go fully submerged. Even in calm water with no visible current it's easy to see the struggle to stay down and then your detector takes a crap. It's a good reminder that no matter how deep and easy to use a machine is if it breaks it still sucks. Thanks for sharing the highs and the lows.
  8. I just found a mens platinum wedding band Friday when looking for a Rolex for a customer. It rang up a solid 13-14 on the 800. It was the first thing other than a bottle cap I have found that hit 14 on the Nox. It was 10.25 grams of platinum.
  9. I wouldn't use my nox at all but rather use my propointer. The Nox is just too cumbersome in this situation. Grab your propointer and sift the area a little at a time. If it's there you will find it with your propointer.
  10. That is a nice haul. The beaches are a mixed bag this year due to closures. Glad you were able to take advantage of the opportunity.
  11. Awesome. Just like what the Nox did for hammered parks, the AQ is going to do for shallow water and wet sand hunting. Pretty good "niche".
  12. That's awesome. Someday soon I'll be retiring to North Idaho and if I can spend a few hours every week panning for gold I'll be ecstatic.
  13. I don't get the angst surrounding so much that is metal detecting today. I can't imagine what a casual or first time user must think of what passes as discussion on some of these threads on these other sites. It's a hobby, a fun distraction from everyday life and all the crap that comes with it. I guess it's where society is at today so no real surprise. I look forward to finding gold rings when I finally get an AQ and if I can help someone else do the same then all the better. I could give a rats A$$ whether the AQ is "limited", a "prototype", or a shovel with headphones attached so long as it works at what it says it's going to do and I can have fun doing it. Sorry for the rant but all my hobbies are getting politicized it seems and I've reached the end of my rope. It's my money and I'll buy whatever my wife allows me to.
  14. I was told once that for much of the last 50-60 years things have been constructed to fit a 5'8" individual as that is the assumed average height of adult males in the U.S. I don't know if it's true but once again being 5'7" seems as though its going to pay off.
  15. I emailed Dimitar about the salt balancing issue as I've never been able to make it quiet. His response was to send me the manual which I had read several times to that point. Not exactly what I had hoped for in terms of customer support but I think it had more to do with me buying his machine second hand as he had nothing in the sale so to speak. This point concerns me a bit as if I have a problem regarding something breaking I don't think that there will be any warranty support.
  16. #16 bought used from a forum member. I use it exclusively for wet sand. Deal to good to pass up but had intended to buy new. I have issues with getting my salt # correct so that it balances in the wet. I think it's going to be a great machine going forward but we definitely need more videos on the wet sand to help others like myself with the settings. I'm able to use it and am successful with it but I'm probably only getting 65-70% out of it.
  17. It seems there is a divide happening with regards to the AQ. It seems there are those who want to pick it apart to the point that if it doesn't find a ring every swing it's a failure and they just can't wait to point the finger and say I told you so. On the other side are those who are wide eyed like a kid at Christmas dreaming of how much fun it's going to be going to the beach. I've been watching the discussions here and on the other forums and depending on what side your on Rick is either a snake oil salesman or a prophet. Bottom line is if you want to know what it'll find you're going to have to buy it and go hunt and be prepared to move a lot of sand. No matter how good the detector is the detectorist has to be even better, more resilient and more willing to do the work necessary to find anything of value. If you're struggling finding gold it's simply because you're either looking in the wrong places or you haven't dug enough holes yet and the AQ won't change a bad plan or weak resolve. As for me I'm a buyer as I'm that 54 year old kid who just can't wait. I apologize if this is way off topic but it seems like things are getting beaten to death.
  18. Good question. When I use my equinox I dig everything because on 4 occasions that I can remember I dug 4 targets that started off sounding and reading as iron ended up 3 gold rings and one platinum. With my MDT I've yet to strike gold but I have yet to dig anything that sounded or identified as iron that wasn't. 100% accuracy so far but even that might be skewed as now I pass by any target that doesn't come in on the positive side with the MDT because I have about 200 pieces of junk that read as junk that I have dug in an effort to learn the machine. It makes me wonder how the AQ will do on a beach I detected yesterday that was loaded with hundreds and hundreds of lobster/crab trap shrapnel. Every two steps was another piece. Would the AQ drive me batty at a place like this?
  19. Simple is better. My only concern with the AQ is going to be setting it up properly to hunt. I'm an end user. My mind cannot wrap around all the different aspects as it relates to detecting technology. I'm constantly amazed at folks like Steve who can not only understand all this stuff but also explain it in such a way that people like me can go " ok, do this now go hunt." If I miss the occasional small gold but still get 90% of the other gold sitting in the wet sand I'm going to be happy.
  20. Thank you Steve! I've got about 30 hours on mine now and no gold but that's only because I haven't found it yet.
  21. There is no end to detecting, only an end to us. Keep swinging until you just can't swing anymore. I think in the years ahead the finds will still be there but the amount of detectorist's willing to work for them will actually be fewer than today. Those of north of 50 are not "old" we're just "older". Many younger folks today quit the moment things get tough or hard. Steve there are many glorious days of detecting in front of you. God bless
  22. This is the place to be if you want to learn. So many great people whose only agenda is to help others. No snark, no sarcasm, no keyboard cowboys. I know you're a legend OBN and that you know that the treasure is not always what we dig or scoop. Glad you're here.
  23. Thanks for all the suggestions and like everyone, I've tried them all. Cortisone shots are brutal and I had one in my right elbow ONCE 😨 and that was it. In order to keep my arthritis and inflammation in check I've changed my diet to pretty much zero carb and now utilize tools like the ArmAid. I still like to compete in Spartan racing so as get closer to 60 I have to work harder at recovery than preparation it seems. I'm a perfectionist to a fault and this most recent bout of elbow tendinitis came from teaching the flop shot to my golf team. I got to practice late, didn't warm up and between 6 kids I probably hit and demonstrated the shot about 200 times. I couldn't brush my teeth that night. I like to think I'm getting wiser as I get older but there seems to be very little evidence to back that up.
  24. I didn't know where else to put this but I thought I would try here but if it needs to be moved Steve go for it. A little background, I am in no way affiliated with this company other than I bought one of these to help relieve my elbow pain. In addition to detecting I coach golf, do a lot of push-ups/pull-ups in my fitness routine and drag my scoop behind me when on the beach. My elbows always used to hurt and there were times I chose not to detect as my tendinitis was just to painful. I found armaid through a fitness friend and tried it out and bingo, it has helped to alleviate the pain I'd get from swinging my detector or anything else physical using my arms. As we age things don't quite work as they used to and pain shows up more often in our daily lives. When I started to see relief I thought this was too good not to share with the forum at DP as I'm sure many others suffer from elbow tendinitis as well as painful wrists and fingers so here is the website. www.armaid.com They have a bunch of videos that show you how to use it so it's pretty easy to get started. Again I have zero interest in the company and my only reason for sharing it here is that it might be able to help someone eliminate or lessen their arm pain so they can detect more. I tried to attach a picture but I ran into problems so I apologize for that.
