  1. Good luck on the trip and.... Get those gold coin TID's locked in you noggin!
  2. Did you check the back of that Merc for a mint mark? ??
  3. Appreciate the details on your hunts including settings I haven't give the 6" much time yet Congrats on the great finds!
  4. Steve what is the weight compared to the 11"er? Thanks
  5. That is a truly amazing find.. and sorry for the very late reply to your post. The Archaeologist is correct in that most "copper culture" artifacts are found in Wisconsin due to being closer to the site in the Upper Peninsula where the surface copper deposits are located. The few found in my area are usually located in summer camps near river mouths, Indian garden sites and select areas along the Lake Michigan shore. I have permission to hunt an area near an old MSU dig site along Lake Michigan where I made my only copper culture find, a 3" awl.
  6. From beginning to end what a great adventure in picture and narrative. Thanks for taking us along Steve
  7. Welcome to the forum Ray, Here's a link to Steve's forum post with nugget hunting tips and settings for the Equinox 800. https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/7468-my-tips-on-nugget-detecting-with-the-minelab-equinox/?do=findComment&comment=75909
  8. Great photos Steve and thanks. My Aunt and Uncle were chosen as participants in the Matanuska Valley Colony experiment. My dad who was single at the time followed later by riding the rails to Seattle and taking the boat to Anchorage. When the War broke out he went to Seattle to enlist, returning back home to Michigan when the War in the Pacific ended. I heard many stories about the Matanuska valley area growing up as a child and have always wished I could have experienced it during that time. Definitely need to put getting up there on the bucket list.
  9. Looks good Steve. Can't wait for the next installment. Gold, Gold, Gold!
  10. An SMF from Notka/Makro would be welcome But for someone just putting their toe into the waters it might be a loong wait.
  11. Other than the Equinox there really is nothing new for competition. FTP could have competed with Garret and their AT series but chose not to for whatever reason. The market for single freq and selectable frequency waterproof machines is saturated now anyway. Cranking out a multitude of new 3 frequency machines on a yearly basis is similar in practice to FTP's updating of their older top end machines and we can now get those at some really good prices. Since the long awaited CZX was a dead end we will just have to wait longer for that great new thing as we have no other choice. I'm sure the Equinox wasn't hatched in a day either. That said, I agree it would be nice to get a tid bit of info from them. ?
  12. I'm sure they are working on other projects besides buttoning up Andre's Manta. The bar got set a couple notches higher with the Nox but I have confidence in the talented people at FTP.
  13. Carl, Thanks for the candor regarding th CZX. I know a lot of people are wondering about the prototype Manta. Question, Is the mechanical aspect nearing completion and can we expect pretty good ergo's? Thanks again Tom
  14. So it was a no go, a dead end or did it lead to the discovery of something potentially greater?
  15. So that's why for all these years I have dug stainless boating hardware out of my lakes everyone else has been passing over. The Nox gets SS nut bolts and other fasteners just like any good single freq machine. I never could understand why anyone would use an Excal in fresh water and that goes for the CZ20/21 as well.
  16. A little beauty. Wish we had more high Kt gold in the States.
  17. Thanks for the reply. I asked because I assumed (incorrectly) that you were in the upper Great Lakes region. It must have been a real treat to hunt there. I would go nuts for an opportunity like that.
  18. Very nice finds, looks like you have found a decent habitation site.. Although possible to find them near where I live, I have never seen a Jesuit Missionary Ring dug. Was there any British activity in the area or mainly French.?
  19. Yes, covers a broad range of TID's, never seems to settle in a narrow range around the 26 of a typical dime no matter how well you center it and try different sweep angles. Seems to be when very close by to an obvious iron false where pinpointing can not hit the suspect target, always going to that falsing iron location. Probably a case where it is just barely seeing the signal as 2 targets one iron one non-ferrous.
  20. In determining if it's an iron false or a non-ferrous co-locate target the Nox has pushed this ability to new limits. I have seen even broader spreads in the TID, going as high as the mid 30's up averaging, usually on deeper targets and down averaging of coins and coin size non-ferrous.
  21. A lot of very good points in this discussion that I agree with completely. A couple quick questions for those that hunt older sites where numerous types and sizes of iron, steel and rusty tin are the masking culprits. Is the lack of an overload indicator on the Nox a positive thing for your hunting style? In other words would it add or detract from your ability to discern co-located non-ferrous in heavily trashed areas? Although I like to hear it all to get those tells we talk about I l need to try hunting with the all metal horse shoe button off in these sites if only to satisfy my curiosity about the difference in audio vs making use of the iron volume control.
  22. A couple pics of Lake Michigan from late afternoon yesterday. The heavy waves lasted around 6 hours here. Unfortunately I won't be able to get out until Monday.
  23. Should have gone up the sides some and a little further back in the scoop. Wasn't easy for my friend to weld the ends of the wires. Had to drop and drag the material.
