A Computer Question Or Two

Recommended Posts

Reads like GPU (graphics processing unit) driver (software that runs the video) problems.

On your's is likely a integrated GPU  (built into the motherboard).

Most likely it's software related, since you indicate it only occurs while web browsing

Get a external hard drive and back everything, then upgrade to win 10.

To test this, download and install FireFox web browser.

Ill bet $ it,s a conflict with Java (on the web page) and Chrome web browser (doesn't support Java)

Thanks Chris;

the warped image problem has "healed" itself...or at least has stopped.

I did switch to Firefox from google...and from Explorer...

Now, I have lost my exchange 2 connection even though the icon is still on my computer...maybe my computer is getting senile???

this is a Studio 17, windows vista, intel core 2 duo that I bought when I retired almost seven years ago...oh, wireless

Do you have a 'maintenance' program on your computer?  De-frag, driver update, scan disk or anything like that?

Run those and then reinstall.  If it worked before it should work now.

I am a retired Electronics Engineer who used to work on computers. I would tell you to bring your computer by and I would try to fix it. However, I don't think were on the same Lilly-pad.

So let me tell you what I would do to try to correct the issue. Not saying it will work, but it's a start.

First is to make sure your anti virus is up to date. Run a full scan and let it clean off any viruses. This will take some time.

Second is malware removal. I use Malwarebytes software. This will also take some time. Just follow the directions.

Third is to make sure drivers are up dated. This is always a problem for most people as they don't know where to get them. I use a piece of software called SnailDriver and it searches for the appropriate driver for your PC.

All of the software is available on a website called SnapFiles. I use this web site for any software needs. You can get there by typing www.snapfiles.com The software is easly installed and fairly simple to use.

This should correct any virus or malware issues. It is possible that you have software conflicts. This is harder to correct. In the old days of XP it was not uncommon to reinstall windows and all the software every year or two. That is no fun

Browsers have always been debatable. It is really a personal preference. I prefer firefox and chrome. Both are good and reliable.

Now let's talk hardware. You have an old machine. In today electronic world, anything older than 4-5 years is old. Vista was a Microsoft flop. I would recommend looking for something new. Web sites demand a lot more of computer today. Makes the old computers much much slower.

Hope this helps.

Some really good advice above, having spent more than a few years within the electronics and other markets specialising in IT - ICT we have certainly seen technology change.

The chrome books are great and if you have good internet access and a little patience most things can be accomplished and there really is a great section of services form google, mail, docs, calendar ect.

However if you need to do a little more and wish to use Windows programs then Windows is required.

Contrary to many we like Windows 10 for lots of reasons, most PCs do cost more money, again dependent on the use you intend.

Apple I used to recommend Apple, in actual fact I am an OSX certified Tech, but Apple after service is not very good at present in the UK, several issues with friends and families laptops and very poor service although they did get there in the end.

Lets just say lots of more affordable good quality options now exist and generally reliability has improved, as someone said the grandchildren can help, yep those Grandchildren ( a general statement) changed my career path :)

As others have said, decide what you need to achieve and do some research before spending the money, use good backup software and at least a software firewall and virus program from a reputable company, if you want to know what we use send me a message.

Hope this helps in some way.

Fred, this is what I suggest. Save all your files (documents, downloads, photos, etc) to a portable storage device.  Buy a new PC based (Win 10) computer.  It will be simpler for you to adapt to than an Apple.   You can get a good computer for your needs for under $500.  Let the computer geeks at Best Buy and Staples suggest models based on what you tell them you need.  You basically just start over developing files and bookmarks as your needs demand. Throw the Studio 17 in an appropriate recycle bin.

This is a pain in the ass, but ultimately better than trying to save your old computer.  I have had good luck with HP computers.
