I purchased my Zed in mid-2015, and since then I have complained about the display being difficult to see clearly. Then yesterday I realised that it is a "sunlight-readable" display, presumably similar to what is used on some of the later Garmin GPSs. That is, when the display is in full sunlight it can be seen very clearly. I'm assuming most people here probably already know this, but I've mentioned it in case there are one or two others out there who are as smart as I am and taken nearly two years to work it out.

You have found the back light I am assuming. I rarely use it but sometimes it's necessary.

I can't read mine without the sunlight ... takes all kinds I guess.

I thought the back-light would run my battery too fast.

l have to admit that I did realise/notice that the screen did show up a lot better when faced in to the sunlight not long after getting my Zed. Never ever thought to give that a mention. Durrrrr..... You did well to bring it up.

On another note. Steve Herschbach......do you ever go to sleep??? You seem to be on here 24 hours a day. LOL

Good luck out there

JW :)

I have four miniature dachshunds - my little girls! Combined they roughly replace one human infant. I am a light sleeper, and somebody will bark. Or somebody else will want out. This happens almost every night, and often multiple times per night. So answer - no, I really do not seem to sleep sometimes. When I am waiting for one to go out and do her business or am now just up and can't fall back asleep I will check the forum. Now you know the rest of the story!

"I thought the back-light would run my battery too fast."

I always have the backlight on full, and my GPS is always on, and nearly always recording. I have only ever a couple times detected so long in a single day as to run short on a full charge. I charge every night. If you do so, I would not worry about the backlight being on. The screen is transflective and works best with bright reflected sunlight (at just the right angle) but the backlight helps under nearly all other conditions.

If you want the BEST display possible go out and get an anti-glare screen protector.

Last week I went into my local Radio Shack and about the only thing they had left were screen protectors.  I have bought these in the past and put them on my detector screens.  It is not a big improvement from my perspective.

I didn't buy the right product it seems.

I now have bought the ANTI-GLARE kind.  BIG difference

Hurry out to your local Radio Shack before they close and get 3 of these protectors made for digital cameras and camcorders.  My brand was PointMobl.  They are easy to cut because they already have rectangle lines you can follow.

You will feel great outside day or night.

You will see the screen!  You will see it better ... now let me see ... I didn't have my polarized sunglasses on so I don't know what the screen will look like but it is sometimes unreadable with my sunglasses.

Maybe a new thread if you have the time JP.  "How to target large, deep gold with the GPZ?"  Is it your conservative settings or something different again?  How does the audio differ, etc?
There are bits and pieces (linked below) that maybe all add up to an answer but if there are any other secrets you want to add JP,  I'll listen

I have been painfully considering a purchase of a 7000.  Seeing the gold a friends 7000 is getting that seems to be out of reach of a 5000 is giving me reason for this consideration.  However with the areas I used to have access to that facilitates the use of the large coils are being lost due to development and I would have little or no areas to go that there would be a benefit to the large coils.  If Minelab would make a small coil like the 11 inch diameter that is stock with all the other models up to the 7000 it would justify a purchased.  I wonder if it’s the technology in the electronics that will not work with a small coil.

Seeing some barely-used gpz 7000's coming across the auction block.
Weren't there early ones that had issues?
If so how were these issues resolved?
How can you tell if the unit on the auction block is not one of these?
Having not owned one yet I'm a little behind and appreciate any feedback.

Hello Johnathan the GPZ 7000 has been out for a while now, is there any plans to do a DVD. I could see how a soft ware upgrade could potentially make it harder to give any advice on settings as upgrades come along. Or is the whole thing a big head ache.

Hi all  does anybody ground balance there machine as per instructions then leave the machine on the ground with ferrite under the plate ?
I did this while i was getting the rest of my gear ready and it really made it quieter , in very  hot ground.
The machine was sitting there for about 5 to 8 min approximately.

I updated to the latest firmware in september, sunday when I was detecting I would lose my sound through the wireless, I plugged in headphones and no sound from the machine through them either EXCEPT for turning it on, and also when the WM wireless connects I hear that (but probably from the unit not the headphones)
Anyone else have issues, I do see 2 other threads but have tried both fixes including updating again. No dice, need the GPZ!
