depending on your GND Numbers in the right meter the depth can vary, If the numbers are higher it makes the machine a lot hotter but if the numbers are high means you have a lot of mineralization which then reduces the machines abilities to see the target, So it's a fine line in getting the Balance right.

Maybe you should try the test again on this time try and run the SAT as low as possible and run the Gain up high as possible that will increase the depth, because when you run the MXT and the GMT up in the Hyper SAT range it can dramatically reduce the depth of the machine,  The Ideal setting is for High Gain and the lowest possible SAT speed without loosing your threshold, The Hyper SAT area on the MXT and the High SAT speed on the GMT is only for use in Hot Ground and if you run the machines up in that range it can cost you up to a 1/3 of your depth so try to resist maxing out the SAT,

hope that helps,

John.

I am sure you can run the GMT just fine. It is an easy machine to learn.

The depth you are describing is however possible depending on the exact gold to silver ratio in the nugget. Surprisingly adding silver to gold creates an alloy less conductive than either component when pure. The shape matters a lot as does the orientation. Think of looking down at a half dollar laying flat on the floor. Easy to see. Now turn the coin on edge. It appears as a long thin object, harder to see. To a certain extent detectors act the same and prefer surface area presented clearly to the bottom of the search coil over mass. The mass of an item does secondarily matter as does the smoothness of the surface. Think skin effect electrical pathways. Porous masses and spongy or wiry gold can all be difficult to detect, as can “pins and needles” crystal masses.

Long story short a flattened rice grain nugget of 80% gold and 20% silver If on edge in bad ground...... well, it might be hard to detect.

If something is bad in a detector the coil is usually my first suspect. I swap them out to check if possible.

The depth you are quoting is not great by any means and the machine may be subpar, but you have to leave open the question until some more checks are made. Best way is to compare to another GMT.
