rumblefish
Do you guys feel a hard case for your machine is necessary for travelling or is it overkill? I think it depends on what you define as travelling. If the detector is travelling with you, then a padded soft case would probably be ok to protect the most important parts like the cotnrol box and the coils. If the detector is going through an airport and you can't control what happens to it, then a hard case such as a Pelican would probably be a wise option. They make cases in many sizes, and I know from various motorbike forums that people rate these very highly. They are watertight, lockable and almost indestructible.
Steve Herschbach
I use a good old fashioned beat up Samsonite suitcase, the kind the gorillas tossed around in the ads. It is very boring looking and nobody would guess there is a few thousand bucks worth of electronics inside. I like it that way. Custom cases attract attention.
Treasuredude
I have always just carried the control boxes and coils in my carry on bag so nothing get damage or stolen. But if you have to pack it, like Steve said...I go with luggage that does not look flashy.
