Make sure to take a good picture of the content of your luggage! It is the best record if you have to make a claim.

I always bring a Tesoro when I travel for work. I just put the coil and control box in my carry-on backpack.  Pinpointer, digger, finds pouch, and rods go in my checked suit case. 

From years of air travel in the music business I can attest to how hard it is to get the airline to reimburse you for anything of value that is damaged in checked luggage.
