Hydration Packs/harnesses - What Do You Use?

Recommended Posts

I would hang a couple of these on that Rokon.

That would be a NOGO... I already hung a couple fairly thick plastic 32oz bottles (with insulated jackets) on each side of the bike right behind my legs, and the cactus got them. Poked them both full of holes, so I don't do that anymore. I now carry my spare water in my tote.

Where can I get the canvas water bags , never seen them before? How do they keep the water cool?

You'll pay a good sum for one of the original "Desert Water Bag" flax water bags, you can find some on Ebay, I don't think they're being made any longer, at least I couldn't find anyone that still makes them, the original company that made them sold out to Coleman and it seems Coleman stop making them in the late 60s early 70s, but you can still find "Desert Storm" water bags made for our soldiers for Desert Storm that work exactly on the same principal, they're made from flax just like the old desert water bags, but are not the same shape and have string at the top/mouth to keep them closed instead of a cap/stopper, not ideal but if it works what the hey, desert water bags keeps water cool by evaporation just like a swamp cooler works, which is why most people keep them tied on the front of their vehicle, the air flowing over the bag while moving induced more evaporation and thus more cooling to the water inside, you need to soak the water bags for about 48 hours to totally saturate the flax material and then them fill with water, the outside of the bag will always be wet and as such the water will evaporate which causes a cooling affect to the contents.

Desert Storm bags, this is the cheapest source I found, but you can find them many places, especially army surplus stores, etc...

Other sources for the Desert Storm bags.

Actually I did find a source for the original style Desert water bags, but they're expensive..

Well, I have to admit I quit using the Pro-Swing harness. Two years ago at the Minelab conference in Vegas I got a free Minelab branded Camelback type rucksack. I did not use it until last summer, when I decided to use it with my ATX. I used the bungee and strap off the Pro-Swing but just clipped it to a loop on the shoulder of the harness. It worked great, I had water to sip on, and a place for my camera, first aid kit, etc.

Now using it with the GPZ and works great. I do not seem to have shoulder or back issues that require hip stick or Pro-Swing setups that shift weight to the waist. I just need to get it off my arm. The backpack is just handier to grab and makes sure I have the stuff I need with my without having to resort to a separate backpack.

The backpack is not the one Minelab currently sells which does not have the Camelback water bag like the one I have. May have been special for conference attendees.
