Glenn in CO
The rake I use for tailing piles and mine dumps is a cultivator rake with a super magnet attached one end and a arm rest and handle the other end. I can move alot of dirt with this setup. The super magnet is your best friend and trashy areas.

I used 1/2" conduit and welded all together. If you like a close up, I will have to dig it out and take some photos.
Steve Herschbach
Excellent! I have used the scrape and detect method a lot over the years with hot VLF detectors, and now the SDC 2300. You do not need more depth - just get the gold closer to the coil! I did an article on it recently at http://www.minelab.com/usa/treasure-talk/scrape-and-detect-with-the-sdc-2300
Steve in Idaho
We use the same method on tailing piles. We put down a 2' X 6' piece of ply wood and rake about 3" on the board and go over it with my trusty Gold Bug II then dump the board and rake more dirt onto the board. We work the piles in strips from bottom up hill and dig into the old dirt hill side. We have taken a lot of gold from old gold mine tailing piles.
beatup
I not only do the same thing but also use the same setup at the back end of my dredge i find it easier then a shovel.
