delnorter
Yes goldbrick, the 90% / 10% silver - copper ratio applied to the seated dime as well. This had been so for quite a few years, since 1837. Prior to that the ratio was actually 89.24% silver to 10.76% copper, 1796 to 1837. In 1853 13 stars were added to the obverse and they reduced the total weight of the dime from 2.70 grams to 2.67 grams. That year, 1853, there were 95,000 dime made at the old heavier weight (2.70g.) at the Philadelphia Mint. These heavier 1853 dimes were differentiated from lighter dimes, of the same and subsequent years, by not having the newly added arrows on either side of the date. LipCa
Nice find Ron. I'd be hitting that area hard... You're right Mike, I found a 1834 $5 last year and didn't notice that...
goldbrick
Mike , Thanks for the interesting info. I was reading about 1853 dimes just the other day. I have one I found nugget hunting. So when I read some were key date I tore in to look at mine. Alas, no joy. Mine has arrows. I would be bummed but how could I when I am the proud finder of an 1853 seated?
