Steve Herschbach
“This is only the 17th meteorite found in Victoria” Nice one, and just another reminder to prospectors that a “hot rock” may be worth more than the gold!
Bear
Not a lot of detail in this article. I have never found one but I would like to. I am pretty sure a guy I know found one on some salt flats in Nevada. If you have a questionable rock that meets the criteria get it checked out. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.foxnews.com/science/gold-prospectors-mysterious-rock-turned-out-to-be-super-rare-meteorite.amp
Hardtimehermit
That's a cool story, but i wish the article would mention what type of rare meteorite it is. If i was to guess from the look of the slice i would say mesosiderite. I have to wonder why it took 3 years though to figure out he had a meteorite considering he swings a detector.? thanks for sharing ht

Happy day to you either way.

mn90403
I think the rarity is in the location and size and not the type. Here is something that addresses that from the article below: The researchers argue that the Maryborough meteorite is much rarer than gold. It's one of only 17 meteorites ever recorded in the Australian state of Victoria, and it's the second largest chondritic mass, after a huge 55-kilogram specimen identified in 2003. Here is your link to the H5: https://www.sciencealert.com/man-holds-onto-rock-for-years-thinking-it-was-gold-turns-out-it-s-a-super-rare-meteorite Here is the scientific paper abstract: http://www.publish.csiro.au/RS/RS19002
Rege-PA
I don`t think its legal to sell or export meteorites from Australia. 🙁 You are encouraged to give them to the govt, I don`t know if they pay you for it.
