Thanks, Simon;

nice to see and hear the machine in action...too bad Mitchel didn't buy one for me to try!

There are some very exciting firmware upgrades in the works for the QED that he's working on which I can't wait for.  I do have to send my QED to Australia to get them done though,  I guess that's a big issue for those wanting to buy one in the US... it's a long way to send your detector to get any upgrades.  The upgrades are free though so that's pretty damn good.  I guess a bit like the T2, it's had upgrade offers that were free but damned if I was going to send my T2 back to USA to get an upgrade on it's firmware.  Hopefully a future QED upgrade will be USB to do upgrading.

The good bit about that video is you can tell it wasn't faked in any way, he made a few embarrassing verbal mistakes which were fixed up with text subtitles, if it was staged they'd do a retake ?

I would never think he would be deceitful...why would he bother? Besides, it is generally easy to know if the digging is real.

I admire the work and care he puts into his machine!

But, too many adjustments for me. And, way too far to ship for upgrades or repairs...

I enjoyed the video and wish him every success!!

I think you'd be surprised Fred, the adjustments are minor and pretty easy to learn even for me and I'm not the most knowledgeable with this detecting technical stuff. Threshold A and B are the two major ones that sound confusing and had me worried before getting it  Having the two thresholds seemed scary but it's really not.  Here is my very simple overview so you can see it's not that complicated.

Threshold B has a default of 50, lowering it a few numbers increases the response on smaller targets, raising it a few numbers increases the response on larger targets or you can leave it in the default for a balance between the two.

The Threshold A seems to be more like the threshold volume, although having it too high makes it unstable, and too low makes the smaller targets harder to hear so you adjust it how you like it knowing higher is likely better.  Default is basically silent.  You can get technical and tweak the balance between these two thresholds to get an even better response.

This is my simplistic overview of it but they're the only two challenging settings, the others are self explanatory, gain is obvious with 1 to 10 and 10 the highest.... and mode is 1 to 16, 1 being the lowest timings more sensitive to the smallest targets and 15 being highest but less sensitive to small targets and 16 for the beach (no GB).. this can just be left on the default of 3 from memory.   Certain coils prefer certain modes, most of my coils work on mode 1 well with my NF EVO preferring mode 3 or higher.  Again easy to tell, if it won't run stable on your usual settings change the mode up until it does.  You quickly learn which mode is best for which coil.

Pitch is the same as the GPX where you can adjust the tone to your ear if you have hearing problems.

SMR can be used to get rid of EMI, you adjust it up and down, a lot like manual tune on the GPX, a few notches normally clears up EMI if there is any, usually the default is perfectly fine.  It's very resistant to EMI.

Then there is just manual ground balance and auto ground balance... This is where current improvements are in the works which I'm really looking forward to and I'll be sending mine off as soon as they're ready to roll.

SMF you don't need to touch in many situations at all.

and Battery to tell you the voltage remaining on your batteries.

I find it an easier detector to "understand" than the GPX.  To me it has the simplicity of my easy to use VLF's.  I'm sure Reg or someone will correct me if I'm wrong on any of this, After all I'm very much a beginner with it.

It's a good little detector for the price, I doubt it's going to knock the socks off a GPZ in many situations although It's more sensitive to tiny stuff than the GPZ from what I've seen by the number of shotgun pellets I can dig with it, similar to my GM1000 for finding pellets. It's more similar to the GPX and SDC only a lot lighter which is something I really like about it, no battery on my back or cords hanging off me for a start ? .  That is my opinion on it so far, I do like it.

That was an overview of every setting on it so there really isn't many. It also saves your settings when you turn it off.

So you can see how small the control box is I put an American 1 cent coin on it that I found

Well, if they want to send me one for free, I will take on loan.

I think I know many excellent nugget hunters to help me.

You make it sound simple but I am not Simon...teasing, and the reference may be obscure...

Sure wish they had these available in the USA (and with a service center).  I think it would satisfy Steve H's challenge although that also carries a moderate price requirement, I think (or does it?).  But the Aussie price sure is attractive.

Until then I'm just hoping the Fisher Terra Manta makes it to market while I'm still in good enough shape to nugget hunt.  (Please, please, please...)

On seeing the title of this thread & posted by you Simon I got all excited thinking you had scored a nice bit of gold from the other day that you said you were heading out. Bugger. I was let down.

Good luck out there

yea, I clocked up another skunk, by law of nature you have to find another 3 nuggets before I am due to find one with your last result of 7 vs 1 so technically it's your fault ?

Erlistoun Station has a new phone number 9031 3954. If no one is there to answer please leave a message. The new managers name is Butch Shaw.
Also as of the coming Tuesday Aug 1st, an aerial muster will be taking place also utilizing ground crews in 4x4's quads, bikes and numerous other mad max look alike vehicles.
Please, if on the station it is imperative for your safety and ours that we know where you are. These are not tame cows from a petting zoo, they are wild scrub cattle that will kill you.
Also be aware GSDU are active on this and the surrounding station checking miners rights, permits and compliance. Two men, residents from NSW and Tas faced Leonora court today for illegal mining (on an EL without a section 40E permit)
      Cheers,
      Steve

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone based in the Melbourne area is doing the trek across the Nullaboring to the Leonora, Laverton or even the Kalgoorlie area in the next month or so?
There's a 19" GPZ coil for sale in Melb but the postage cost is ridiculous and I'd be willing to swing you a carton of beer or some dollars plus I promise not to say nasty things about you Victorians ever again. I am even willing to publicly state you are better at AFL than we are.

The front and rear cover have been done, interior layout finalized, editing finished, just waiting on the first print copy to arrive before going into full print. It will also be a Ebook on the internet. Here is the front and rear cover, cheers Dave.

"Blood Gold Revenge" by Dave Wright. Set 2012, in NQ OZ a story of gold detecting, murder, drugs the works. A brutal read in paperback at Amazon Worldwide and available on Kindle. Tis a frightening read for us detectorists with a fairly intriguing fast moving story line. For those of you who enjoy such a read, and perhaps snowed in.
