I've been to that area for a half of a day.  There is still some larger placer mining going on there.  Much of it is claimed up but if someone did some research I'm sure you could find some open area away from the mountain there.  I continued on from that area on to Salt Lake City (I started the day in Las Vegas) and it was one long and interesting road after Osceola but I highly recommend going from Las Vegas up 93 on a trip.  Make several days of it as there are some old stopovers, wildlife watering areas and such that was a great surprise to me.

We could all add interesting drives on the way too and from gold.
