Equinox 6" Coil Connector Repair?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I just found my coil connection sheared off at the control housing. (oops, and bad timing as I was just headed out!)  Luckily no damage to the control housing connection but the other end was bent and broken right off...

I sent some photos to minelab to asses if they will fix it or not but still waiting.    I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to buy this connector anywhere?    If minelab wont fix it then I will end up splicing one on myself and hope for the best (minus the water tightness of course) .   Any help would be so appreciated!

They look like Binder connectors Binder

Most likely Minelab orders them as a whole connector/cable assembly, just connector may be not available...

The proper splice and some of that waterproof sealing shrink tube and you will be in business. Put the shrink tube on before you splice!

Two layers of the dual wall heat shink and you're good to go, one slighter bigger length one over the smaller length one would be best for added security.  It glues itself as it shrinks.  Any decent electronics store should have it.

Steve gave excellent advice there, it's so easy to forget to put the heat shrink on before soldering, I've done it so many times it's not funny.

Very nice of Steve to send you the plug end.

As horrid as the sound is in this video it really describes well how to use the dual wall heat shrink, it's important if you want a water tight seal you follow the instructions in the video, and adding the second layer of it just helps if you have any tiny flaws in your first layers shrink.

Your coil will be as good as new once you're done, you're so lucky to get a plug end for it so easily.

I habitually save anything that might be useful. This was the connector off a prototype coil I had to destroy so I cut it off and saved it. I have so many extra Equinox coils the chance of me needing this is zero so may as well go to somebody who can use it.

Yeah, I’ve left stuff out before a splice... infuriating!

Could you please take pictures as well, if you don't mind. Would be interesting to see the shielding and type of wires used.

Same thing happend to mine.  I got clumsy and did it to myself.  I was down in Quartszite at the time.  So I had Bill Southern order me a new one so I could get back at it.  Also my control housing survived the beating.

Microsniper, let us know what Minelabs response is.  Thanks

I was reading about coils. They said a round DD coil has a lot of advantages over football shape coils. It has been a long time ago. Can't remember why ? Any one can help with this?😕

      Hi all,
      I'm from France, working with a GPX4500 of 2003.
Yesterday when I started this old guy, I was affraid by this problem :
      - Sound when the treshold start is strange.
      - The autotune (research for free frequency) is a stable sound, with no variation.
      - And no power ! about 5 inch max for my metal digging pickaxe.
I tried some factory resets, but the problem is always the same...
I tried this one with another disc, trakking button, cable, headphone, battery, the problem come from the main box...
      Anyone knows this problem ?
Thank you and have a nice day.
      Luis

I figured I should post this here as I posted the information elsewhere on the forum that's less relevant than here.
Our extremely innovative Russian friends have managed to make a range of aftermarket coils for the Equinox, they remove the security chip out of your coil, reseal your coil and give you an adapter which then allows you to run aftermarket coils.  They make a range of sizes too.   My pick of the bunch would be the 9.5x5.5!

That's the range of sizes and pricing in Russian currency.
You can find out more about it here on these Russian forums, you'll have to use Google translate or something similar to read it.

When nobody can do it, the Russians do and they do it well.

Dose anyone where I can get a coil end that's goes on the black control box. I have a 9.5" coil that someone changed the end for another detector. I can't find where to order on Whites forum. Thanks Dean

Today I went to the beach to take advantage of the super tides.  I got there and as luck would have it there was no one on the beach in my spots!
I turned on the detector as I normally do by pressing in the on/off switch on the left side of the control housing.  It turned on properly but I can remember I felt a 'give' that I hadn't noticed before.  It was working so I just went about my detecting looking for targets.  There were not that many either high or low today.
When I went to take a break I got past the dry sand and tried to turn off the detector as I had turned it on.  I pressed the button and all I felt was it 'give' without stopping.  I tried repeatedly but no luck.  I turned off the headphones and that didn't help, it just made it so everyone could hear.  Now I know I've got a problem but what do I do?  I unscrewed the connector to the coil and a message came on the screen that I think said 'Cd' and then the power went off.
Now the power will not go back on.  It was just before 5 PM in Chicago but I've left a message for Minelab.  It will probably be Monday before I hear from them now.  It looks like the 3030 will get some use or the SE Pro if I use a detector in the next couple of weeks.
Anyone had a bad switch yet?
      Mitchel
