I also would guess that it is manganese. There is an area near Basin, MT that has nuggets that are 1/4- over an ounce that are completely covered with manganese. A guy a friend new found a large nugget panning in this area and picked it out of the pan, looked at it and tossed it back into the creek. When it was in mid air, he realized it was a nugget covered completely with manganese. He never found that nugget again but found some other similar sized nuggets that were completely black with manganese.

 Sorry but you guys are all wrong. It's  Nuggetiorite and the black is a fusion crust. Very rare. And priceless.

 My only regret upon finding this specimen is that I didn't find thousands of pounds of them, so I could have given all of you one!
