Couple Odd Pieces

Recommended Posts

Found this what looks like pewter head with a gargoyle on top and a strange old buckle with a glass front. Think the buckle used to have a photo or painting behind the glass. Other is an obliterated IH penny but was a good find for the day as it was 10" down mixed in iron near some recent digholes someone missed. Pays to be patient when working these beat up grounds.

That's some great stuff!! The head thing looks like theĀ Greek god Hermes or Roman for Mercury ? The buckle looks very old possibly mid to late Victorian.

I think the buckle is a rosette from around the early 1900's give or take

Thanks for the info on the Rosette. Still puzzled on the head. It was done with lost wax and is hollow inside. wonder if it was some sort of ornament on front of a vehicle?

If by 'vehicle' you mean an automobile or similar, it seems small to me for that.Ā  But lots of other things have been decorated equivalently.Ā  Could it be from a toy figure?Ā  Did you find it in a school yard?

I like the buckle, but I can't help in ID'ing it.

Odd to be a figure, head seems bit large for a kids toy. Maybe part of a statue of some sorts. Was found in same plot of land where I found the flying eagles, 2 cent's, trime, half dime and few seated quarter and dimes. Most of the finds there go back to mid 1800's.

Usually a statue or figurine I would expect it to be bronze.
