Good report!

Your experience tracks what I’ve seen the few times I tried to use a PI on our Florida beaches... they just weren’t for me.  Digging down 22 inches because a PI can’t discriminate well at all is not my idea of efficient detecting and at 72, I’ll stick with my VLF machines.

The whole point of a PI as far as I’m concerned is to handle mineralization that’s cuts VLF performance by 30% or more. So from my perspective there is no reason to consider a PI for most Florida detecting. Though I imagine there are a few people swinging a GPX with a large coil on the Treasure Coast looking for that extra depth. :smile:

Thanks for the great write up. Picking an area to hunt is going to have a great impact on success rates it seems. Until they make a machine that actually analyzes the metal, we will always have trouble with the same targets that we have always had trouble with.... Iron and Aluminum. I'm glad the discrimination seems to react better in wet sand. That helps in the areas I want to hunt in. Looking forward to your minus tide hunt.

Sorry your hunt turned out so bad. I suspect that any detector would have struggled in that location. AL nuggets, for example can’t be effectively discriminated out with any system of discrimination I can think of. As far as those large pieces of junk - the non ferrous wouldn’t give a low tone unless they were really big or really shallow. As far as the elongated rusty bits, I believe that when you are more familiar with the machine you will find it relatively easy to rule those out as likely good targets no matter what mode you run the AQ in.

I suggest you get some rusty nails, some large bits of rusty junk, some pull tabs, some coins, a few gold rings and find a place in your yard or a nearby bit of open ground and start learning how the AQ works on targets you know the identity of. It’s  all about sound - you have nothing else to go by. 

The key to success with any “audio only” detector is learning what good targets sound like and then go hunting where good targets are likely. Sounds like your site for your unsuccessful hunt has - based on your prior experience there with other machines - a very low probability of recovering a piece of gold jewelry. Add to that, your unfamiliarity with the performance of the AQ and I can understand your frustration.

I’m the guy that’s been hammering on the fact the AQ is still a PI. Beep and dig I feel is a little extreme however. That means digging every target, and I’m certainly not doing that with the AQ. In tones in particular there are many targets that clearly say “don’t dig me.”

In some locations however there will still be vast amounts of stuff that sound good enough that you have to dig them, and they will turn out to be junk. Personally, I was pretty good at using tones on the Infinium, ATX, and TDI to pick targets, and I do not find the results with the AQ to be significantly different as regards discrimination capability. The TDI could discriminate every bit as well as the AQ in my experience. The AQ mainly adds as much depth as is probably attainable in a PI designed for the beach environment. But VLF like discrimination capability, or even close to it? No.

Long story short your results unfortunately do not surprise me in the slightest. That results like this would be seen was obvious to me as soon as I saw the picture below posted back in December of LE.JAGs finds using the AQ on a volcanic sand beach. The rings are nice of course, but look at the junk dug doing so, which mirrors the type of junk you dug. If the location has the rings, great. But if not... well, all you are going to do is dig junk, and lots of it. Even before I saw the picture though I was expecting this. It’s just the nature of the technology being employed. It’s still a PI. The best I’ve used yet if I overlook the battery system... but still a PI.

Personally I’m a huge fan of the AQ and am thankful to finally get my hands on one. Like I said, the best performing beach PI to date in my opinion. But it does not replace a VLF any more than any PI before really has. Most hunters in most locations are still going to want to stick with their trusty VLFs. The AQ is for the kind of people who have always had a soft spot for PI detectors for one reason or another, and I don’t see it significantly changing the fact that PI detectors are a niche subset of the overall beach detecting market.

Great post Mark, sorry you did not get lucky on your outing. If it makes you feel any better, I’m still waiting to score my first gold ring with the AQ. I seem to have lost my mojo lately in that regard! :smile:

He lives in Reunion, and uses BBS. He is not used to PI detectors.

So he picked up all the targets during 7 days (3 hours per day)

The Jag certainly wouldn't have had as much iron junk...

In PI land there is a tendency to point at bad results and tell people “if you just knew your detector better.” It can’t be the technologies fault, it must be operator error. The reality is you can say the same thing about all detectors, VLF included, which also do not have perfect discrimination systems. It always helps to have more experience and know your equipment better. Yet this is also true. I can take a person who has never detected before and hand them an Excalibur and an AQ and have them use both for the first time for a half day at the same location. They are going to dig more junk with the AQ. I can also take a person who is an expert with an AQ and an Excalibur both, and they will no doubt still dig more junk with the AQ than the Excalibur. There is a genuine difference in the results that will be seen with the technology regardless of the experience levels of the operator. One answer to the issue of too much junk may be “you just need to get to know your AQ better.” The AQ however is not some kind of “cut through beds of iron and only see the gold” detector. There is another possible answer and it might be “should have used a VLF.” :smile: Use the proper tool for the job, and not all sites call for a PI.

Few years back, wife and I flew to Daytona beach. Of the detectors at hand at the time, an Excal and Sand Shark fit the luggage space available best. I found an area of red sand about 10 to 15 feet wide and about 100 feet long that the excal just sounded off on in all metal and nulled completely in disc. Sand Shark pulled up coins in that area. On the same trip Sand Shark also found a ring for a panicked young lady who flipped the sand off a blanket and forget her ring was on the blanket and found a white gold keeper under a pier where the EMI was killing the Excal.   Glad you added "most"!

      The Impulse AQ will come with an external NiMH battery good for 3.5 hours. Spare waterproof extras may be costly. I am certain one of the first thing some of us will do will be to make cheap non-submersible versions, and probably extra life hip mounted versions. This would be really great if we ever got an 8” coil. Battery on hip... super light swing! The battery cable that comes with the AQ is way too short to use for a hip mount, so the other job is sourcing the connectors and making longer cables. Lithium Ion will be an obvious home brew alternative to the NiMH, which was a late change by Fisher.
      The connectors are not proprietary and so will be easy to source. Making a dry land cable with a 12 hour hip mount battery should not be too hard, or a Li-Ion under elbow version with more capacity but not much more weight. Too bad it’s 15V or we could just hook up a GPX battery. Since the Impulse is derived from Eric Foster designs perhaps higher capacity batteries made for the TDI will work?
      Another side project would be a headphone dongle to employ alternative headphones including wireless boxes.

      Hoping I got on the list for an AQ Limited as I inquired with Rick.  If not I can wait for the final production.  Perhaps some of you PI guys can chime in.  Obviously the Impulse depths on gold rings is fantastic and like many here can envision the potential.  I do not know how the FCC regulates detectors, but was wondering about the early Whites TDI Pro.  I'm told by someone very knowledgeable the TDI Pro hits gold rings 20 inches easy.  Whatever the depth it's impressive.  I do not know why Whites stopped TDI Pro production- perhaps design Rights?  Then Whites produced the SL and later the TDI BeachHunter, neither of which have the power of the TDI Pro.  My friend says not even close.  I currently have a TDI BH.  So why did the raw power of the TDI Pro go away?  Did FCC regulation require watering down?  Or again to do with design Rights?  I'm asking because does the AQ Limited being so powerful meet FCC regulations?  Might actual production units be a bit less powerful?  I suppose not, but perhaps I should cross my fingers I make the Limited list?  There was a time I wanted a TDI Pro for deep gold rings and couldn't get one and ended up with the less powerful/still fun TDI BH.

      I bought this 4 x 26650 battery holder on eBay after quite a bit of Google work. They are a surprisingly rare item. It comes with sleeves that can use 4 x 18650 batteries also. It ran me $29.65 delivered including shipping and tax. I ordered it on June 25th and it arrived from China on July 14th. The holder delivers 16.8V via a DC adapter plug or 5V via a USB outlet. It has a thin oring on the lid for an IP67 seal.
      I also ordered an IP67 M8 4 pole 16.4 foot female to pigtail cable from Automation Direct for $10.50 plus shipping and tax. I ordered several different cables so lets add $5.00 for s&h for this one cable. They delivered next day!
      And finally 4ea EBL 26650 batteries from Walmart for $20.99 free shipping, delivered in a few days.
      Total parts cost about $70. I have a 26650 charger already that came with my Tarsacci so you'd have to figure that. Some sets of the batteries come with a charger. By the way, the EBL seem in short supply lately.
      I shortened the power cable to 5 feet, more than enough to set the detector on ground if need be. The DC adapter that comes with this battery box is great. Blue wire to negative post and brown wire to positive. Warning - I am not vouching for the polarity. I used a multimeter to check my AQ battery and matched that. You should do the same. I take no responsibility for anyone doing this mod and blowing their AQ! The black and white are headphone wires. I hooked up a 1/4" female jack to those.
      I am using the AQ mostly as a wader unit employing some true chest high waders that have a big pocket on the inside front. I'll drop this battery in that pocket and plug my Sun Ray Pro Gold headphones in. I could use my TaoTronics to go wireless, but that seems pointless the way the battery is mounted near my head. I need to determine run time with four 26650 batteries - should be way better than the current 3 (all metal) to 3.5 (tones/mute) hours running time I get with the Fisher battery. Enough that I probably will not need to do a battery change at all and perhaps enough for a long day. I also need to determine how the detector handles without a battery under the elbow. Lighter of course, but too nose heavy? Should be fine in the water as the coil is neutral. Maybe too nose heavy for some people for dry beach use. We will see. This would be a great belt hip mount battery for dry beach use. I suppose it could also be mounted under the elbow, perhaps with the included strap, so I'll consider that also. It would balance well like that. It is IP67 rated and with proper headphone / power cables might be good enough to use under arm for wading / shallow dunking use at least.
      Operating sequence. Power up battery pack (it has its own power switch) then power up detector. Power off detector, power off battery pack. Doing otherwise may trip the circuit protector on the battery pack, necessitating removing and reinstalling the lid to reset. The pack has its own built in battery level indicator. And it may be used to charge a phone or other USB device! I was warned this USB capability might create interference in the AQ, but that has not proved to be an issue so far. The two circuits, 16.8V and 5V, appear to be isolated.




      Powered up - and no smoke!
      I really like this. Very easy for a not super skilled person like me to do, less than third the cost of a spare AQ battery, and should get well over twice the run time. If I had another complete set of batteries ready, it would be an easy swap for even more running time. It leaves only one cable to the rear end of the detector, and that is my only concern at all - I will try and beef that up and protect it better. I'm thinking a rubber boot that clamps completely over the end of the detector rod. I ordered a couple like like the one pictured below to see if it will stretch enough to work. Long story short is there is a very good chance this will replace my Fisher batteries for most of my use. This is why I had no problem getting the Limited "wader version" of the AQ as I find chest waders to be a good option at Tahoe and it's cold water for all but a couple months of the season when the water gets reasonably warm for mask and snorkel work. I used to do a lot of ice diving with drysuits while gold dredging, but am not looking to get quite that serious any more.

      Out with the AQ Thursday 3 hours....... Skipping shallows and digging faints only at this location seems to be the best way to control the amount of trash. The one big piece of iron I did dig was shallow... The Buffalo, (191?) was as deep as I've dug in the place for anything, I would say in the 20 inch range.... It sure likes Nickels...And remember I hunt in All metal only..never switched over to mute this time..straight PI hunt only........... Gold ring is small, just under 2 grams 14k , 3 scoops deep..maybe in the 13 /14 inch range.. Ring never really gave a good solid hit so maybe it was on it's side? 10 gold with the AQ,  9 rings and 1 misc..Can't wait till fall hits and the NW winds kick in...☠️
      Side note, This is the beach I'm so confident about the AQ being the best I had invited anyone that want to meet, over on the other forum. So far no local takers but did get a few from a distant that wanted to give it a go. Anyone is welcome.......... A very tough spot, Been hammered for years by just about ever machine made. Been dredged, mined, and Has High Power lines about 100 yards away. And if you noticed in the video I'm wearing a drysuit with dry gloves, during the summer. Water quality is not the best either so playing it safe..Still waiting for the Cygnus invite challenge also...nothing yet. Let me know, the door is open..

      Second set of pictures are from the batteries I'm working on..should have something working mid July, still waiting on a few detail things. The main thing is battery life and fix the connector issues.
      I really could do a much better battery setup if I were to change the shaft to a carbon fiber then mold a carbon fiber battery pack into the rear like the MDT...
