What I do and this is the same with the Excalibur in PP....and Now the "AQ" .............you come across a faint ..stop..tune the machine for the very best response. Then the same with the very next target until you feel you have the greatest depth possible at this beach .

May I add a little to it, that disturbance in the wild a lot of the time is only in one direction but repeatable.

On this type signal I take 2 scoops and check pile  as a small lead sinker will give the same response,  if it is still in the hole usually it is a good target. 

Amen to that Jim, how many times have you stopped...for that one way signal or even a ghost signal...dug a scoop..still not sure, then dug another ...and there is this faint hint of a target in the corner of the hole.
