A friend uses a drop of some acid concoction to reveal dates on buffaloes.

I think it's ferric chloride solution.  It can be good for answering the question "what's the date?" which is worthwhile, IMO.  Unfortunately it doesn't improve the value.  Even if it were to reveal a rare date, the demand for such badly worn coins is zilch.

Good warning on not trying to use it on something which might have value -- which means a coin for which the date is already showing enough to be determined.  Also, pretty sure it only works on the 75% Cu 25% Ni coins, not 90% silver coins.

Update, Went back to the merc spot a little while ago. The heat index here is 105F. I swung for all of about 20 minutes ( this heat is bad ) and found a rosevelt at the 9 inch mark. Had the 11 inch coil on, must have missed it with the 9. Oddly enough I found a Rose bush tag, Must have been a rosie kinda day 😂
