Metal Detector On Mt. Everest

Recommended Posts

Oh wow. How many gasping breaths of rarefied air would the bearer have saved with a half a kilo lighter Deus instead?

For this ultra-specialized, expensive, once in a lifetime, low temperature application, whatever detector you choose - ditch the stock batteries and custom fit them with lithium thionyl chloride primary cells, and have plenty of power till -55C.

I would have taken the SDC. Better machine and lighter (5.1 vs 6.9 lbs).

You appear to have misunderstood.  The detector I saw on the show was an AT/Pro (IB/VLF), not an ATX (PI).  But, yes, there are lighter IB/VLF's than the AT/Pro, as others have pointed out.  For example, according to Steve's database, the XP/Deus @ 2 lb is a full lb (0.45 kg) lighter than the AT/Pro.
