Orx As Jewelry Hunting Machine?

Activity rather slow here so thought I’d ask about options and suggestions on detecting for jewelry with the Orx. May have asked about settings in jewelry hunting topic also.
I hunt woods mostly but want to start going places that have better chances of finding jewelry.

Hi ,

I am not a jewelry hunting specialist but I have tested an Orx 2 years ago and it is very similar to the Deus which is my primary machine.

So the Orx settings for jewelry I would say : COIN FAST factory mode, just change to 30khz frequency.

14khz freq is good for medium / big targets in clean areas ( low iron trashed ) but too low for tiny objects like jewelry , and with 50khz there is an important loss of depth.. 30khz is much more reactive than 14khz and more sensible on tiny targets .  I would recommend you to test the different settings at home  before going in the field , this is very helpful to understand the detector behaviour and find the best settings ...

As we have quite a few freshwater lakes around our neck of the woods, I always keep check on water heights, especially around boat ramps, piers and swimming areas.  A couple of years back we experienced a very long drought leaving many of these lakes partially or fully dried up allowing for some pretty exciting detecting.  Aside from a decent number of old silver coins, many silver rings and various other pieces of jewellery came to light using the Deus - just a matter of gridding up the shore/lake bed and reaping the rewards.

After a decent bout of rain the lakes were full again, though once again are slowly dropping in levels and a whole new number of targets are starting to appear again (wave action exposing new targets over time).  The best thing is the lack of more modern junk targets, at least certainly no where near the density of junk you find in a park scenario.  Don't think I have the patience looking for micro jewellery in real junky parks, will leave that for the more dedicated.

One reason I sold my ORX and stuck with the Deus was because of my inability to handle the constant mid tone audio barrage when hunting in modern aluminum trash. The ORX as it is presently produced does not give a gold jewelry hunter any advantages for audio discrimination between junk aluminum and possible gold targets. It doesn't do that much for US nickel hunting either depending on target depth and ground conditions. The Deus at least has full tones which can give slightly different audio quality and pitch for various low to mid conductors with overlapping numerical IDs especially gold jewelry which usually sounds very distinctive on the Deus. I did not find that to be the case with the ORX.

Using the ORX for coin, jewelry and relic hunting in less aluminum filled areas is okay and for gold prospecting the ORX is right up there at the top of my list.

I wonder if anyone had any success for ring hunting with Deus/Orx by  using the pullback method done  in a  video posted before. On the Nox I  can't tell a pull tab from a  ring.If gold can give a  distinctive sound that would be a big plus in good  jewelry locations. I have a sled hill where we have found over 40 silver  rings and only 3 gold rings. This year about 8 silver rings and no gold.I dug over 100 pull tabs  and 38 nickels hunting  here the last 7 hunts with silver being the main focus.

In good soil conditions the pull back method on pulltabs actually works on the Deus but only in full tones which the ORX doesn’t have.

The slight difference in tones and numbers between a  US nickel and most undamaged late model oval pull tabs is possible to hear on the Equinox with practice especially in 50 tones. The slightly older blocky pulltabs are harder for me. If I’m just gold jewelry hunting with the Equinox I’m digging good sounding targets with solid numbers in the 8 to 21 range. I used the word good on purpose. For me it is fairly easy to hear “good” sounding targets on both the Equinox and Deus in the gold range. On the ORX that was next to impossible for me. It sounded like every gold range target had boosted audio. Just my very subjective experience.

My  turf soil is not to bad.How deep does the pullback method work. That sled hill area which is in a popular park here in   Rochester,N.Y (.COBBS HILL) has    mostly those old beaver  tail pull tabs.It also has tons of old bottle caps where I made the mistake when putting it in 4Kz and getting a high tone on a nickel hit  when MF gave a low  hit and I did not dig. This method only works if the MF signal is  picked way off the ground off and 4kz   gives a high tone.If mf sound goes away fast after lifting coil then getting a weak high  tone in 4kz you  better dig since it could be a deep non ferrous target.I learned the    hard way and passed up  signals i should not have. Some targets are very deep here too and some are not.I always enjoy your imput. To me Metal Detecting is all about    adjusting to things.

What about the Orx 2 tone mode? Just listen for the shorter signals with a roll to them. Should be just as effective and can't be any harder than all metal mode that doesn't have an iron audio.

How much depth do you lose between the 30khz and 50+ khz? I seem to get descent depth at 56khz at least it is plenty deep for coin and jewlery hunting and then some. Only drawback for me at the high frequency was I was picking up the ends from 22 casings and tiny bits of lead that sounded really good, tricky to pinpoint but getting used to the size and sound relation better.

ORX ...On low conductive objects, do not lose range .. on 54khz..at coil 9 "Hf., ...
on highly conductive coins, the range is already slightly lower/ 4-5cm/...., compared to the frequency of 14.4 khz ...

9" round HF coil   Coin Deep at 54khz...

And for comparison, there is also a coil 9.5 "HF Ellipse, in Coin Deep at 14.4 khz

The Orx doesn't have a 2 tone mode.
