They weren't holes but you could tell they had been dug and the wind and sand were covering them.  I use the dig marks/holes to let me know there could be a patch around if I grid it.

Clues come in many ways!

Ok, thanks for confirming.  I have to admit my eye gets fooled.  I found a small cross (not a crucifix) that gave a high TID and looked white as snow.  I felt good I had found a (solid) silver alloy item until I noticed some orange peeking through....

Magnet is a great diagnostic tool, that's for sure.
