Norvics New Troopy Setup

Yeah Jasong, I have an 11ft off-road caravan also but I cannot tow it into anywhere near where I prospect thus the rigged Troopy. If you have a roam around FNQ OZ via Google Earth Satellite, north of the 18th Parallel, you`ll see a lot of rough remote country. Fortunately for me it is so rugged and remote there is still many undiscovered patches.

Most of the patches I`ve found in the last 20 plus years can only be got at by walking, no wheeled vehicle can access, in country that has little interest to fossickers as it has no records of gold finds, and you know the first bit of advice a fossicker gives is usually research and go where gold finds have a history. I simply advise remove the blinkers, clear history and geology (yeah geology too) out of your mind and go out there as a novice but a novice that knows how to use a gold detector, for gold arguably is the most widely spread element on earth, and we have the most advanced gold loaming machine man has ever had, MLs metal detectors.

I grew up in FNQ, I know the sort of country you’re talking about, Shipton’s Flat and Cedar Bay up near Cooktown come to mind.

That's a great attitude and mentality norvic. Unfortunately, here in the US there are not many of these undiscovered countries left. As off the grid, I prefer truck campers. There you have high clearance with full off-road capbilities, but no trailer. Earthroamers are cool. About 1 Million. I bet they throw-in a high-end espresso machine.

Yeah GC this is how my detecting has evolved in my environment to now and why the Troopy is set up as is. It is our environment that decides how our individual "style" evolves and we each live in different environments thus develop our own styles, I know as I age and can no longer do the amount of walking that I`ve found necessary, I`m going to have to modify that style yet again maybe revisit those more easy to get to old patches and get the pieces I`d missed with better techniques and more advanced detectors. Never a dull moment with this crazy hobby we are into and who would have it any different.

I have to admit I am envious of the life style you are describing. Things are so different here as you know. Yes, we have vast deserts and other landscapes here to explore as well, but the gold rich areas are much more centered around smaller areas, at least those that produce good size nuggets, and we lack the access to vast goldfields like you are having in Au. Also, the gold is generally much smaller and getting anything bigger than an ounce is extremely rare. Once the stupid pandemic is over I will plan an extended Au-trip with a few friends, just like many other DP members have done before. Who knows, perhaps one day we will have some good coffee together. 😁

I think mine is the 2021 model thus the navi standard.

Yes, 2021 has sat nav standard across the range, I picked up a Workmate wagon yesterday and was pleasantly surprised when I jumped in it and saw the radio.

Funny that, Sat nav is factory standard, but you can’t have central locking or electric windows, not that you really want them in the bush anyway.

I have used sat nav with aftermarket android vehicle fitted and smartphone with Oziexplorer for yonks, to me they are as important as detector/coils to maximize gold "retrieval", although the Toyota Sat Nav in the Troopy is a proprietary unit thus seems not compatible with android, as a sat nav for getting around the cities and on bitumen it is friendly and easy to use plus its radio has great AM  remote reception , thus I`ve fitted my old android setup as photo shows to have the best of both worlds. My troopy is more a work vehicle than a RV, tis what I do for 6 months of the year since back in 98, tis a lifestyle I wouldn`t swap for anything.

Strangely the Troopy has central locking but no electric windows, which is something less to destroy on close encounters of a tree kind.

Swegin, in OZ basically the Toyota Land Cruisers Series 70 are that popular in our mining, farming and fishing primary industries they haven`t changed their rugged format since 84 despite the rest of the markets switch to "creature" comforts, diesel, reliability and ruggedness comes first by far plus we do not have a comparable vehicle manufacturer industry in OZ  to "protect". But Health & Safety mandatory requirements are pushing thus our 70 series LCs are probably heading for extinction.

Hi Norvic yea there is a night and day difference between your 70 series and our 2021 LC.  Not to mention that Toyota doesn't offer a diesel here in the states.

I am glad that you started this post lots of good info here.

Too bad the diesel isn't available here in the US! But it's  hard to blame them, with all the restrictions on them here! Not to mention the added cost of the Blue Def on all diesels now!👍👍

JoeD, had to google Blue Def to see what you meant, now I see, we are just a wee bit behind (or is that ahead) in that stuff but tis getting us too. DPF is currently OK here, but not for long. Go back only 10 years diesel was deemed better for the eco than petrol/gas, but their all doomed, whilst I`ll probably not live to have an all electric powered 4WD, I can just drool over their capabilities once refined with an electric motor on each wheel, no diffs, gearbox etc hanging underneath to get caught up, be able to climb an electric power pole, well nearly.😉

Much the reason I ended up buying one. Need parts in the bush? Rob that wrecked one down the road to get you home.

I wouldn’t say they’re headed for extinction, just a very long over due update. The newer single cab utes are actually 5 star ANCAP rated, hence mining companies buying them in truckloads again.
