Coils For Tesoro Lobo Classic Or Tejon Or Vaquero, Maybe Other Models That Work On The 17.5 Khz

Recommended Posts

I am looking someone that has extra or used coils that are still in decent condition. I am trying to build a detector from one of the Russian boards and will be needing a coil first for testing and later if the detector works, for hunting. It needs to be tuned to 17 to 18khz to work.  The coils for Tejons, Vaquero and Cibola and maybe other Tesoro models will function. I don't know that much about the models Tesoro sold and there doesn't seem to be much info on the net about such details. Coils seem to be hard to find for these units also. I have been searching and not finding much. I found one used Lobo with all the pieces on an auction but it found a home before I could make a run at it.  I looked at some non branded coils also but there wasn't enough info about them to determine if they would be suitable.

The 6" coils, for example, (especially the concentric but sometimes the DD) show up fairly often on Ebay for decent prices (meaning under $100 and sometimes in the ~$60 or so range).  (I just looked and right now there is one but with a silly price.)  One thing about at least the more recent (relative term 😁) Tesoro coils is that they come in two varieties:  4 pin ('Delta') and 5 pin ('Epsilon').  The LST, Vaquero, Tejon, and Cibola all use the 4 pin coil.

I saw that, 4 or 5 pin arrangement. I finally found my way to MetalDetector.com yesterday evening and looked at what they have to offer and found several coils that are listed to work with Tesoro models compatible with each other. The prices are not too bad considering what they run for some other Detectors/brands. I don't have a problem with paying $150 give or take $50 for a piece if it's right and since I am not an experienced prospector, (yet) Haha, I only need to lay out the cash for just one coil to start with and make sure my project is even going to work. If and once I get to that point, I can work on another size. Start out with the cheaper unit, when I know I have a metal detector, go for the another unit.

Hi, this may be of some interest - from the 1989 Tesoro magazine where an article on the Lobo suggests it was launched around then.

I use a Tejon and have been lucky to get the small 4 by 7 ellipticon (elliptical concentric) coil, but I've never seen any of the bigger ones.

Same here, only seen the smaller eliptical.

The coils in the above picture are for the original Lobo. This detector - and the previous Diablo 2 use coils with a 4 pin MALE connector - although the frequency is close to the later Lobo Super Trac and other Tesoro models - Rusty Henry confirmed that the later models coils cannot be converted to work with the original Lobo and Diablo 2.

Nel still makes coils for the delta series connectors. You should be able to snag one of those easy enough.

I have a friend who is currently using my loaner Dual Field. He likes it and wants his own. Looking for a clean, low mileage, salt water friendly coil DF. I know that some of those coils have had small leaks making them useless in the salt water and not interested in those. Thanks!

I’d like to get a damaged CTX coil to try and connect the pcb to a homemade Bigfoot coil. Just succeeding with a Bigfoot coil is hard, digging into a bad coil and making connections to the pcb even harder. So looking for something almost free but I pay shipping. Pcb has to be good so must have been good before you ran your truck over it….
