Yes, I was just clarifying.  Our language has way too many inaccurate and misleading words, 'tin' having evolved into one of them.

I think JCR and kac are onto something -- pewter (alloy made up of mostly tin).  That was an all-purpose metal for a couple centuries, kind of like aluminum is today.  The density is right.
