P L B (personal Locator Beacon) Accidental Activations From Coils

Recommended Posts

For those of you that carry a PLB or EPIRB, I’m not sure which Minelab or PLB and EPIRB models are affected, but there’s an interesting discussion and a Minlelab advisory about accidental activations due to a PLB sitting too close or touching an active coil. Just something to look out for if you carry one when you’re out and about.  They recommend keeping it further away than 10 cm from a active coil.

Apparently carrying the PLB in a Faraday bag helps alleviate the problem aswell.

And apparently, it doesnt matter if the switch or button is not pushed, the unit self-activated in their testing.

This is very interesting and brings up another question:  does anyone know if any other metal detector brands (such as Fisher, Garrett or White's for example) are susceptible to the same problem?  Inquiring minds would like to know.
