I Know I'm New Here But......

This particular forum is comprised of people who use metal detectors to find gold nuggets. There are some heavy hitters here from around the world. It’s like a prospectors convention.

I’m not a prospector, but I read this section of DP often....maybe I will expand my horizons (after over 35 years of coin/jewelry/beach/turf th’ing)....I do own a PI machine (Whites TDI Pro for beach detecting).   I really like what Steve has done with this sub forum, providing a “fireside chat” feel where top experts in prospecting from around the world can express their opinions on the latest/greatest of prospecting machines.  Don’t need to change a thing here! It’s up to Steve anyway to share/lay out his vision of DP, and it’s one of the best....it’s the only forum on the Net that I’m regularly contributing to theses days.(after being a  member of 5 different forums in the past 14 years).

I'm new here as of today but I came here knowing what to expect.  Even though I have only detected for gold once, I really enjoy reading about detectors, gold and prospecting.  As for Steve and his forums, I was on his forum when he was up in Alaska.  I even responded to one of his posts when he detected on the island of Kauai.  This is his forum.  He knows what the people who come here want.  His posters here know what they want and stay here because Steve delivers.  I'm 77 years old and the likelihood of detecting for gold is quickly disappearing for me.  I hope to still be able to read the posts on this site and enjoy them for many years to come.

PS - I own a GPX4800 which I use in Culpeper Virginia, an Infinium and an f75.  Recently sold my CTX3030 and Fisher 1280X.  And I live in Canada.

I just have to add my two cents worth. 🙂  I strongly support the way Steve has designed, developed and supports this forum.    I have been on this forum for less than a year and must complement the many contributors and their knowledge.  It is from these contributions that I have gained much knowledge in the arena of nugget hunting.  As others have observed this is like an evening chat around a campfire.   As I learn more about nugget hunting I try to contribute a little to the conversation when ever possible and appropriate.  I have also learned that when entering a conversation it is often best to just sit quietly and listen.  It is amazing how  much a person can learn from just listening to the conversation.  The same is true here.  A specific thread may be about a specific detector and it's function, characteristics, etc.  but there will also often be little tidbits lurking within the text.  These tidbits will be about technique, approach, philosophy, location information among other "nuggets" of information.   Collecting these little "nuggets" of information is akin to collecting 'fly speck" gold with a VLF metal detector, after a while the total adds up to something significant.   Although I am focused on gold prospecting, I also frequent the other parts of this forum in search of those prized "nuggets" of information.   A single comment in a jewelry hunting thread or coin hunting thread can lead to a surprising amount of discovered knowledge if one is willing to do a little research.  It is not uncommon for me to find a single comment (not specifically gold prospecting related) on one of the threads that will lead to several hours of on-line and or library research.  Almost always this research leads to new knowledge for me.  So I say THANK YOU to all of you that continue to contribute to this forum and thus to my knowledge base.   I have found at least 20 metal detector and metal detector/prospector related forums on the internet (there are probably many more) and of this group, this is the most active forum.

Steve, this is your forum to operate as you choose, and I for one like it in it's present format.

Welcome to the Detector Prospector forum! Anything remotely related to metal detecting and prospecting for gold may be posted here. Forums for other subjects may be found here. The main goal here - to inform and educate. Please keep threads and posts on topic (metal detecting and prospecting). Off topic posts may be moved or deleted without warning.
This is the oldest forum here, at one time the on,y forum. As such it is a catch all for a wide range of subject. However, after about page 6, I move some posts to sub-forums for archival purposes. For instance, posts about specific Minelab detectors get moved to the Minelab Forum, and posts about specific Garrett detectors get moved to the Garrett Forum, etc. This makes it easier for people to find posts about specific subjects in the future, rather than sifting through everything here.
The main goal of the forum is to share information. If you see something interesting on another forum or anywhere else, please link to it. Mention any brands you like. The only goal here is to inform and anything interesting or informative is not only allowed but desired as long as it is on topic.
While visiting this forum please act as if you are visiting my home. Treat others with decency and respect. Politics is not strictly prohibited, but limit it to items of concern such as public meeting notices, comment periods, etc. Any post mentioning any politician by name is going to be deleted, period. No detector wars - every detector serves a purpose for somebody. For general editorial purposes this forum is treated as if it is a magazine.
Do not place ads for your detector or equipment for sale here. That is only allowed in the Classifieds and is only for participating members - read the rules.

A note about the Google Ads - I know we all hate ads but they pay for the website. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. All I can do is to promise not to go overboard with them.
Special Note To Dealers - Dealers are welcome here, with minimal guidelines. Please read My Policy Regarding Dealers
If you have problems logging in or any other issues while on the forum Personal Message (PM) me or send me an email. Information on other general forum use and features can be found here.

Welcome to the DetectorProspector forums! These forums are normally "on topic" only. This forum is the one exception in that it has no real topic except getting to know other people. That being the case you can discuss pretty much anything here but the overriding rules apply more than ever. There is to be no posting of anything that is going to be disruptive (no trolling).

To reiterate - the Prime Directive on all these forums is decency and respect. If you can't comport yourself like a decent adult, I promise you will not last long on these forums.

The Classifieds ad forum is provided as a free service for active, involved forum members. Ads may not be placed on the forums but only here in the Classifieds. Members will have to have made at least ten posts over a minimum of a 30 day period on the forums before being allowed to post in the Classifieds. Making worthless posts to run up the number does not count. Herschbach Enterprises is not responsible for issues resulting from the use of the Classifieds forum. As always, buyer beware!
No negative comments. If you see an issue, contact the seller or a moderator via pm. Notify everyone when the item has been sold. Use the edit function to modify the original post to do so or add a post saying the item has been sold. Protect yourself. Be careful about giving any sensitive information to prospective buyers. Advertising deemed inappropriate or out of place for any reason may be deleted without warning. The standard Forum Terms of Use apply. Dealers are welcome as long as the items advertised are somehow involved in products related to the prospecting and metal detecting world. Dealers must identify themselves as such. I ask that dealer ads be limited to genuine special deals like closeouts and used detectors. See my general policy regarding dealers for details. 2/17/19 update - Dealers may have no more than two ads at any one time, and ads not updated at least every 30 days may be removed.

The Classifieds is designed to protect you from unwelcome contact. Only registered forum members can contact you via PM (Personal Messaging). This does mean if you want people who are not forum members to be able to contact you that you need to put that information in your ad.

Be as descriptive as possible and always try to include clear pictures of clean items. Many ads are ruined by blurry pictures or not taking the time to clean items before sale. Be sure to make note of any remaining transferable warranty.

Review your ad one last time after you place it to be sure everything is accurate. You have the ability to edit it at any time.
Go to your ad and at bottom next to quote button hit edit You should be able to edit everything there, including the title. The Tag selection lets you put For Sale, Wanted, and other mini banners on your ad. Put up a SOLD! banner when your item sells or ends and the ad will be deleted within a couple days. Ads by non-dealers may be deleted by the admin after 90 days if no attempt is made to update them or otherwise indicate they are still active.  In order to not have to check back to see if somebody has posted in response to your ad, be sure and check the slider control in lower left "Notify me of replies" . You will be sent a message notifying you of any responses.
A big tool for sellers is the eBay sold listings. Go to eBay and search for what you plan on selling. Then click the "used" box on left. Then click the "sold listings" box. Now you can see all similar items that sold recently and what they sold for, giving you a realistic way of checking current market value. Oddball items unfortunately may not have enough sales volume to get help this way.
A note about the Google Ads - I know we all hate ads but they pay for the website. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. All I can do is to promise not to go overboard with them.

You can edit but not remove posts. To have a classified post/thread removed, simply edit the original post and change the Tag (the little gray and red banner) from For Sale to SOLD! The ad will then be removed within a day or two. I like to leave the sold notice up for a short time so people who were looking know a sale was made instead of the item just disappearing.
You may also PM or email me to request removal. Or change the title to say SOLD!
Ads may be deleted by the admin after 90 days if no attempt is made to update them or otherwise indicate they are still active.

Why is question about whites TDI moved and questions concerning Minelab are allowed?

I go to extreme lengths to bring information on new detectors to this website. Many others help. Trademarks are watched, patents, corporate reports, leaks from overseas dealers.... anything that can be found that offers hints to upcoming product. It is a large driver here as many are interested in the latest and greatest. Many experts here add valuable commentary. The volume of information here can get overwhelming when we are on a roll. I try to bury people with early info. As a result, this is the place to be if you like information. Those that only visit the forum, you are missing out on years of effort put into other parts of this website, and you really should look at those other areas. I've never written a book on this stuff per se, but if I did, most of it would be repeating what comes out here a post at a time.
I am also a stickler for accurate information. I'm very well plugged into most things metal detecting, and when I see somebody crossing lines with inaccurate information, I take care of it. Not to brag, but after 45 years of doing this every day, the depth and breadth of my knowledge on various brands is rather encyclopedic. I do not want to create fake machine info as is done on other websites just to attract clicks. It either passes my accuracy filter, or I delete it. You can trust what you see on this site as having a very high degree of accuracy, and there are smart people here to call it out if it is not.
And then people show up and talk hype. They literally come here to partake of all this information, and then turn right around and call it hype. I guess it is the sheer volume of information and the enthusiasm they see as hype. Some get caught up in it, and make poor decisions. Then they want to blame their poor decisions on hype.
      I'm calling B.S.
This website by and large is for serious adults, not children. I have no time to waste with people who cannot take responsibility for their own actions, and want to throw the hype card out as a cover for their poor decision making abilities. I LOVE INFORMATION and I collect and pour it out here. I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SUBJECT MATTER. I am basically a big kid, these are my toys, and I get all giddy when I get new toys. I've lived for this stuff since I was 14 and I'm 63 now... you sure as heck are not going to change me at this point.
If you don't like all that, if it's all hype to you, you are in the wrong place. I'm not sure what you are looking for. A placid site with no information to trigger that credit card reflex? Heck if I know. What I can tell you is I work hard, very hard, for all of you by working hard for me. I gather information and learn things FOR ME, but I am also very happy to share what I know WITH YOU. If you want, and I assume up front that by being here that is what you want. Given the effort I am making, the easiest way to get on my bad side is to bring up the hype thing. If all this information and enthusiastic forum membership is too much for you to handle, just go away. I cannot understand why people watch the website, see all the info, join, and then bitch about the basic nature of what we are doing here.
I have watched for years as the best people, the ones who really know what they are talking about, tire of this nonsense and disappear. You don't think we need that crap, do you? It is the craziest shoot yourself in the foot thing I have ever seen. I envisioned this as a place where those people could come and share what they know, to the benefit of all. But in trying to please everyone I lost sight of that mission. No more.
That's my rant. We have a new machine into that I am very excited about. There are world class experts here ready to discuss the machine and have fun with a rare gift - a new gold getting beast. If that's not your thing, you do not want to have fun with all that, please take the debbie downer stuff somewhere else. I'm not trying to make everyone happy, I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm extremely cool with that. I'm trying to collect my tribe here, the people that get it, and want to be part of it. I really hope that is you, but if not, there are zillions of places that may better suit. I set this website up expressly because I wanted a place to play with my friends, and I never put a gun to anyone's head to be here. If you are one of those that like to play the hype card, know that I set this place up to get away from you!!
One of the very best things about getting older is being able to let my "grumpy Steve" out to play if I want.
