Visited The Barber 2x Today And Rosey Came Along For The Ride

Recommended Posts

This is a rare day for me...3 silver dimes (first time ever)! I went back out for another hour at sunset to see what else could be found in the area I found the Barber this morning. I would never have guessed it would be another Barber day, and the first year of issue at that! The settings stayed the same, and the tones were about the same. I have gone over this area in the past, but when it gets hot and humid in FL, digging a dime isn't worth the effort sometimes. Well, I won't be passing up jumpy dime signals in that area again! It has been very dry here, so I will be hitting this patch of grass again when it rains and lowering the recovery speed. Also, I dug a coin(?) that is 3.1 grams(penny), and it looks to be squashed. However, the thickness is very consistent, unlike a train running over the coin. From one angle, it appears to say 1877 or 1827. Anyone have an idea?

Great saves, they look pretty nice and should clean up nicely.

Good luck on your next hunt.

Anyone know if this looks like a penny that was run over by a train? One of the few things I never did as a kid, so I'm not sure. Thanks for any help!

It does look like one but it wasn't a very heavy train 😀 definitely somewhat elongated. Shame it's so pitted it's not going to reveal what it is. 🤔 The elongated scratches on one side make it seem like it was dragged, but this is speculation.

Any tracks near this site? 3.1g is the typical weight of a copper alloy penny.

Yes, about 100 yards away. I really need to get an ultrasonic cleaner for items like this. I can make out some details, but capturing this on camera is not possible in it's current condition.

Pretty sure you know the flashlight trick, but I've taken it one step further and photographed it with my phone when the light is on it at just the right angle.

Tried that and came up with this. I was trying to get the date to appear to the camera because my eyes are just too old to get close enough. There is also just enough crud on the date to make it hard to read. The reversed binoculars do nothing for this specimen either.

Great photos. The idea is to get the light on edge so the details get shadows:20210529_151930.thumb.jpg.61475df70d20a1c29e4129344df708aa.jpg

Buuuut, your coin seems to have had nearly all its details mashed.
