I consider myself lucky if in a total of 20 sessions I managed to bring home a third of the weight in 2021...

A guy I know here that beach hunts, and has probably since metal detectors were invented took all of his "junk" gold (broken rings, rings missing stones, and other broken gold items) to a refiner in San Francisco and traded it for 10oz and 1oz bars/ingots.  His take was six ten ounce bars, and eight one ounce ingots, so 68 ounces total.   I saw the gold bars/ingots he received, and he's a straight shooter, so no reason to doubt him, but if that was just his scrap gold, I can only imagine the keepers!  That was the first time he's sold any of his finds other then he does harvest various metals that he can cash in (copper, bronze, lead, etc).

I've always heard that Midwest was solid.  Used to be if you sent in jewelry with stones, they'd pull the stones and return them to you, but I agree with your thinking - best to pull all the stones yourself and limit the "wiggle" room on the weight.  I've bought gold from another friend, beach finds and park finds, and if it has a stone we just count it as part of the gold weight, but we're not talking about any significant amount of weight here.   I figure if the stones push it up a half a gram that's okay as the stones will have some value as well, particularly if they're diamonds or some of the better gemstones.
