Just Canceled Prospecting Trip To Az

Just canceled my prospecting trip to meet up with my buddy in AZ. due to the price of diesel fuel at $5.35 per ( 1200 mile round trip ) and still expected to go up more. Been planning this trip for months. I bet there will be lots of folks that will change travel plans this year.

Jeez I wish fuel was that cheap here in Aus, we’re staring at approx $2.10/L ($8AUD/gallon). Not cheap when you plan a big trip like I have coming up later in the year (2828km/1757mi round trip).

Worse here in NZ, we are around $3 a liter for 91 Petrol now, and about $2.70 a liter for Diesel.  It's lucky we don't have far to drive!

Go, or you’ll regret it. At most you are talking a few hundred dollars, if you are pulling a huge trailer. Less if you have a rig with decent fuel efficiency. Find a way to save the money somewhere else. Sell a spare detector? Or just tell yourself you’ll have to find a little more gold. But go. Life’s too short to pass on rare adventures when the time allows, and time is one commodity you will never be able to get back.

I have a 3 Day Field Training Class coming up in a couple weeks and have already had 2 people cancel because of fuel prices.  When you had summer planned, the kids graduation, a family member wedding, Memorial Weekend and Gerry's Detectors Training...those miles add up and with the extra cost of fuel/food then the trips need to be most justified and there is sacrifices. 

Diesel here in Boise is $5.60 a gallon.  What pisses me off most is the stations have an auto shut off (some set at $100, a couple at $150) and my truck can't get a full tank on 1 transaction.

Try to think ahead and put a good spin on it.  After this Memorial Weekend, many of the folks will be hanging out at the local swimming areas and the local parks for their holiday entertainment.  Those grassy areas/swimming holes will need to be detected.

Cost me $650 in fuel to make a 1200 mile round trip last month, I cannot understand why diesel is now more expensive than gasoline as it requires less refining. I was pulling a 40 foot toy hauler. Got about 10mpg.

I would go and not regret it. 👍

I returned home from a 2-day trip at Rye Patch this week.  It was Chilly & Windy...my fuel bill (Diesel) was $150...granted I didn’t leave with a full tank from my home in Reno.  Got home, cleaned my nuggets and tossed them on the scale and I was $25 short of paying for fuel.  But, gold is moving up in price and I my be even now? 😂. I thank my lucky stars I can afford these current fuel prices, but I sure hate it.  It has kept me home and out of some of the Goldfields of Arizona & Southern California this Spring. Here’s to cheaper fuel prices, more gold and smiling faces!

You can do what I did for my last trip to AZ. Buy a good fuel mileage car. You can pick up a VW diesel that will get anywhere between 40 and 50 mpg depending on the year. Through a 3" lift kit on it and you're good for dirt roads. 1000 miles round trip, cost me a 1/3 what it would have in my truck. I know some people want to take everything including the kitchen sink. Truck, 5th wheel, side by side ,etc. But hey if you really want to go and gas prices are the issue sometimes you have to give up a few conveniences to make things work. Never killed anybody to sleep in the car or a tent. In fact I almost prefer that way now unless the whole family is coming. I don't have to spend the day before loading everything and the day after I get back cleaning up. Haven't found a desert road yet to the spots I hunt that the VW wouldn't handle.

That's why buying cheap rigs for cash is a good idea. More money for fuel! I never understood the mindset of buying a $50k vehicle that gets better MPG than a $5k one. Even at 10mpg I am money ahead.
