SDC 2300 Tips

Recommended Posts

Mine seems happy on 3 and like Gcatcher already mentioned one tuff mutha despite being clunky.  SDC also doesn't give me little "fits" like that 6 did....smooth and very stable all day long in my area....jmo

Hey guys/gals.....   Question regarding the SDC depth.  When I added the Coiltek 5 x 10... I did a half-assed air test first using the Coiltek and the stock 8".  I did it with the machine sitting on my deck about 3-4' off the ground with the coils hanging over the edge.  Tried the SDC set on 4 with both coils and depth seemed the same.  The nuggs I used were 3.55ozt., 25 gram, and 12 gram.  The best I could get on the 3.5 ozt. was 11-12".... the others a little less.  After I got done with the half-assed test I grabbed the Monster with 5" coil and actually got about half inch more depth on the 3.5 ozt....

The question would be what kind of depth have you folks been getting from your SDC?  Now that I think about it, I do remember digging the 25gram specimen (pic) at a measured 13".  That's the only real-world results I can provide on the SDC depth?  If you have anything to add about your depth results I'd love to hear them....THANX!!!

What was the best depth did you get get with the 8” coil on the 5000 ? Do you remember what the weight of each nugget you was using for the testing you done?

I just find the statement you made that no matter the size of the nugget it’s depth was limited to the same as the 8” coil. I know a detector along with a coil has it limits as a nugget gets smaller on depth but a large one on the SDC would be more than 8”  I would think. It’s not like you have a invisible force saying SDC you can’t detect beyond 8” .

 I don’t know because I wasn’t there!

The first thing one will run into is the housing on the SDC has a half moon in it already at 8” . So for a elliptical coil to fit in the recess it couldn’t be over 8” long . I don’t see Minelab willing to make a change to the housing to accommodate the elliptical coil that I would like.

Like I said it don’t hurt to ask,

On my post above about depth I just wanted to add that on the 13" specimen I really can't remember which coil I had on...sorry

I use the SDC practically always for shallow washes. But i have recovered bigger gold, including a 8g specimen about a foot deep. But I would say that this is rather an exception and depth with the 8 inch coil will depend on many factors, including soil factors, gold shape/density, coil sweep speed etc. No general rules here, but due to MPF and the small coil size the main focus for the SDC is clearly small shallow gold. However, it really depends also on how you run it. Cranking up to 5 will require a totally different listening technique than having it at 2 and listen to super faint treshold variations and warbles. Both techniques could not be more different from eachother. Running it hot at 5 will almost exclusively detect high/low signals and shallow gold, and deeper targets will often be masked. I personally like to listen "deep", something that requires a "fairly" stable treshold. But also that depends on the soil conditions, EMI, etc, and of course how deep you think the gold is. I hardly ever had a case where a surface target was noticeable only at 5 and not at 2. So, IMHO running at 2 or 3 strives a right balance between sensitivity and treshold stability, allowing for both shallow and potentially deeper targets to be heard. These are just my 2c experiences after having used the SDC heavily for >5 years.

Some years back I used a PI detector on the beach and found it’s no limit how far one can dig .

I’ve used the SDC in nugget country but I want to reach out to someone that’s used it extensively on the beach. Where I’d plan on using it I’ve got to backpack  in. I have other detectors I can use but I want the SDC for it’s compactness and it don’t stick out like a sore thumb . I don’t plan on getting my feet wet so being it’s waterproof is not important.

I thank you ahead of time!
