Rikmariet
It is barely magnetic, some spots more so than others. The black on the shell? can be washed off with soap and water and it's kind of an orange/copper color. The shell is about a quarter of amd inch to half an inch thick and almost seems to be a type of flint, but can be polished to a metallic sheen. jasong
When you say "can be washed off with soap and water" do you mean some kind of rusty dusting on the surface, exposing brown/black underneath? Or you mean you can literally scrub on that black part and it dissolves in water down to the gray center? It seems to be some kind of concretion with an iron oxide coating of some sort and maybe some kind of cherty limestone in the center? Did this come out of a sedimentary formation area? Any info on the geology around you where it was found?
