Went 2 The Barbers At The Old Farm

Recommended Posts

Today I invited Chase down to go to the old farm we went to last week.20230208_135325.thumb.jpg.a52f1b5740930fa3412b9f30ddb570f9.jpg

It's a huge farm with a central house that is long gone but some of the barns and the kitchen cellar hole are still there. We have permission to dig most anywhere.

It started out pretty warm and only got better. Ended up at about 67 with very light wind. Perfect metal detecting day!

I got there early, while waiting for Chase I got a WW1 service button and an old pocket knife in a field next to this one, it had been limed so it was like walking on the moon. For quite a while I wasn't finding much but a couple wheats, and tons of very, very good sounding trash. 😵

We went to the farmhouse site and started searching around late in the day, I went out into the front field and found literally nothing. 😀 I came back to the farmhouse, and Chase said he just found a silver coin, and I should search around there while he went elsewhere. Well that was a very nice thing for me!

I turned around, took a couple of swings, and got a 91 on the D2. Today I was using the remote and the 13" coil.

Dug a little and it went up to 93. About 6" down in the side of the plug I saw it, a 1904 Barber quarter!20230208_203708.thumb.jpg.d4b1716a0ce7a8e4f3d3d760f8074cd6.jpg

This is only the second one I've ever found. I was thrilled. First was a 1903.20230208_203718.thumb.jpg.e3614ce3cb135d7465de3c49326fd12d.jpg

I swept my coil near the hole and got a jumbled 78, filled the other hole, and immediately dug a buffalo nickel with no date. As soon as that was out I got a 91 again, and dug a 1906 Barber dime! 🥳

Both coins are in pretty good shape.20230208_203743.thumb.jpg.5a826675ec3e4b260f845ccc5d925038.jpg

Filled that hole in and got a 95 nearby, for some reason it ended up being an old wheat. 🤔

It didn't end there. 😀 After digging all the stuff below:20230208_203852.thumb.jpg.d8f7a3956d7aaa3ccda33eeb26a5fbd1.jpg

Got an 1896 IHP, and 4 wheats total, from 1912 to 1952 D. A rein guide, and a small cracked brass ring. No inscription.

Then I was hunting next to the cellar hole and got this:20230208_203758.thumb.jpg.7bdf98c33600d19f04a4e00ea8c76816.jpg

It's either an 1800, 1803 or 1808 Draped Bust half cent. Wish I could get that last number. It was a 91, buried about 5" down under a brick. The reverse is so toasted you can barely see the wreath.

I thanked Chase for his grace today, that was really nice, I didn't do so well the last time. He did good too, we both walked away with silver. 🥳

At one point I stopped to talk to a farmer that was "ripping" the field to loosen and aerate it, and ended up getting another 100ish acre permission a few miles away, one that has never been hunted (according to him) and used to be part of a very famous plantation here. YES! 👍

Here's my trash, horrendous today but no iron. Relic Reaper did its job.20230208_192559.thumb.jpg.8d3779be35857503efebee11310ded9e.jpg

Those two huge solid copper washers sounded off like half dollars.

Wow 350! That's some great stuff! It's inspiring to read your posts. Thanks.

Thank you Matt.

That's my main intent, to educate those new to the hobby, to inspire others to get out there, and just a touch of braggadocio (without arrogance). 🤣

I want the people who have helped me progress in this hobby to get some pride in return, individuals too numerous to mention now. Chase Goldman has been the most inspiring. It's been a humbling but rewarding couple of years!

Wow! Someday I will gather the courage to to go to an an old populated area and search. I just don't like people much. But the idea of finding history may override my phobia. Great finds. Keep it going.!

Nice batch of finds. 2 Barbers are a nice bonus for a good day to be out hunting. HH jim tn

Thanks!

Considering I usually don't find silver at most of my permissions, it's a huge bonus. 👍 I honestly think I've improved at looking for it. 🤔

My friend, I've always said the problem with people... Is people. Same goes for neighbors, my nearest is a half mile away. 😀 I've lived in both rural and urban areas, and very much prefer rural life, especially in the South.

I've learned to be gracious and complimentary with these people, this place is harder than most to become part of, the traditions here go back to the 1600s, and it hasn't changed much. Cross one of them and you're toast. 😳

I find that getting one permission can lead to many more, the folks here seem to be vicariously interested in the hobby and seeing you succeed, especially if you're interested in their history. Let them talk as long as it takes. 🙂 Don't be in a hurry.

Probably isn't the same everywhere!

Another great hunt again for you, how can you be so lucky with all that history.

You have some great areas to hunt and some nice permissions in your pocket so keep up the hard work and save as much history as you can.

I will say that at first glance that graphic looks cool, but after thinking about it the tools are reversed 🤣
