gambler
I don't know if this would work, but the price is right.
Roughwater
In watching the show it almost appears anyone can go anywhere and dredge but that's not how it really is. I had looked at the possibility of dredging in the Bering sea this summer but the start up cost's were so high. There's no road to Nome so everything that gets there is by ship or plane. It's not am impossibility if you have a lot of money. Shipping anything of any size from say Washington to the Bering sea starts at 7500 dollars one way. If you bought this old dredge I would hope you could sail it there but it's not set up for dredging Gold so would have to be retrofitted for that purpose. Don't forget to register it with Alaska mining officals. Assuming you could get it there I would have to think the fuel cost would be very high. Do you have a claim in the Bering sea? A claim that would pay? You can't use a dredge that size in the free Recreation area up there. Fuel up there is even higher in Nome. How about the cost of harboring it there? If you really want to dredge in Nome look at purchasing a dredge that's already there and set up for gold dredging. I have heard there are several in port that haven't been in use for a while. If you don't have lots of money but insist in going anyway, fly up there and offer to work on someone's dredge. Get to know some of the locals and find out who the claim owners are.
AU_Solitude
I agree with Roughwater. Nome is among the last of the places I would be looking to start something up on my own - much lower overhead just working as a diver.
gambler
I don't want to dredge in the ocean. I just posted that for other crazies to see. the ocean is carnivorous!
Ridge Runner
Terry I've been to Nome and I know you won't find enough gold on the beach to keep you going. I don't care if you dredge are run other gold collecting equipment away from the ocean it all cost lots of money and then more. You could find lots less in the lower 48 but come out ahead. I too was dreaming about doing that but then I woke up and happy I did. Swing low and slow Chuck

If someone were to take it on something like this, this link might be a better Idea as it's already there. However I save this link more than a month ago so not sure if it's still available. http://www.ebay.com/itm/REDUCED-21K-40ft-Jennifer-Blackbird-steel-pontoon-barge-29-000-Nome-AK-/151673020988?hash=item23506aa23c:g:~B0AAOSwPhdVBGap
Ridge Runner
Terry I'll come up and work for free the first year. If you make it into the second year we'll talk. Now before the excitement over runs you just remember it's all salt water. Salt eats pumps and anything else that is steel. I think it's hard on any equipment no matter what it is. I'm not saying it can't be done at a profit over time. You'd be best to have enough money to last you for two years. Terry you may need just go take something and let it pass. Then I'll meet you half way say Colorado and we'll work west from there. If you don't have a test nugget I'll give you one.Haha Swing low and slow Chuck
