Having used this machine for years, I am curious if anyone here has experience with any settings other then presets, The places I hunt in are older and I would suspect more silvers should come out of the ground.  Yes its a older machine and I dont drive much due to age. I just cant justify the expense of getting a new machine. Thanks in Advance !!

To many people tend to underrate old detectors. Your detector was one of the best in it times. All I can say is it will not be too much of a handicap in finding deep silver coins in the non discriminating mode, it did have the "bees knees" of discrimination of it's time and still worth using it as well.

Talk to Monte. He knows this detector inside and out.

Just my 2 1/3 bits.... For Me... Monte has been the greatest wealth of knowledge for many of the older lines of detectors... And he has a good grabb on the newest Tech as well...  If memory serves me... Monte favors the smaller coils on the XLT... better target separation... and it goes deeper... There are custom programs galore for the XLT... Iv'e tried many over the years... used different sized coils... and adjusted the programs to suit... You know what I found???? Deep Aluminum.... Lol....(it's a west coast jersey thing)  The best luck I've had finding good deep targets here in Jersey... with any of My XLT's...  has been to choose "Coin and Jewelry"  Don't adjust anything... and dig Everything...

Look at preamp gain.  I generally am only able to bump that by a couple notches before my XLT starts getting very twitchy.  You can also look at mixed mode. That will give you the depth of the all metal mode and the discriminatory response of the AC mode when a target is within a depth range which can be discriminated.  Otherwise you will hear the DC mode tell you there’s a target and no corresponding tone from the discriminating circuit may mean it is too deep to discriminate.

In such instances, definitely check in pinpoint mode to see if the targets are larger than a point source.

Also, slow down and overlap your sweeps by at least 50% because the shape of the detected area is a cone which narrows with depth.
