Article On Big Coils In ICMJ

Recommended Posts

The article was written by Chris Ralph on the pro's and con's of big coil nugget hunting. Thanks Chris for writing a great article that for most of us brings back the trouble and at the same time the good side of a big coil. I liked it when you said you pinpoint several targets and then change to a smaller coil so to keep the size of the hole down. When that pick almost comes back in your face from that hard ground you want that hole as small as possible.

Never was a price said about the cost of owning a big coil. You did see a picture of Chris holding the GPZ 19 inch coil with a bigger than big smile on his face. Here he's holding a coil costing more than a lot of detectors I own.

Thanks Chris

Chuck

Chris always writes well informed articles. However, the purpose of these articles is to inform and educate. The price of detectors and coils is not really pertinent to the information.  One thing about the ICMJ is the Editor's policy against promoting any brand. That can make writing an article challenging in some respects.

JW; I would smile too if some one sent me stuff;that can be the joy of being a well known and well respected Nugget Hunter.

I doubt he got it for free, being one of the first could be enough benefit if he lived in the southwest or had time to play...

Many years ago the Australian treasure magazine had an article comparing the price of detector to the results...the conclusion was that the finds were proportionately equal to the cost...but that was only one authors results.

Fred

Reading what you just said about cost and finds has a balance point. The more I think about it the more that holds true with some of the detectors I've own.

Now when my wife says i'm spending too much money on a detector i'll just say but Fred said..

Best of luck !.

Glad you enjoyed the article.

Price is a thing that matters differently to each individual. For some guys, the price of a budget VLF is astronomical within their personal finances. Believe me, I was in those shoes - as a younger guy when I had two children and a stay-at-home wife caring for them, and money was really tight in those days. The first metal detector I ever bought - for $200 - was enough that my wife was unhappy with me. For others, the money is not a big issue, so its a personal thing, different with each person who reads the article. That's why I didn't address it.

Sadly the big coil in the picture has still not been used. My mother has advanced cancer and is in the last weeks of her life, my house is in shambles from a remodel project and the weather up here at the moment sucks with rain, snow and cold temperatures. I also have a mining convention I am attending for the magazine this week. So I am going nowhere in the immediate future of the coming days. I've got lots of plans for next year, but I've not been out detecting since mid October and future detecting until the weather warms will be limited.

Wishing you all the best Chris, this is a reminder I need to get a subscription to ICMJ...I really enjoy ICMJ's increase in  nugget hunting stories such as yours. As far as coils, price is the price you have to pay to play  :)  All my coils that I have bought used or new   were paid by the gold I found. You got to have the right tools for the job..something I learned years ago in construction field.
