Wanted - Mods For TDI Metal Detector

Recommended Posts

Need mods done for my tdi. My sister has some property with an old township on it. Would like higher voltage batteries also. Can you put batteries in before mods or after? Thanks strider55

Last I knew, Reg had quit working on mods. Said he had a friend thinking about doing it, but no decision so far.

If you find somebody doing the mods, please post it. I'd like to have Reg's mods for the SL done to mine. Need somebody with micro soldering skills from what Reg told me.

I believe White's is in the process designing a new battery pack for the SL to increase input to 14-16 volts (from the existing 12volts.) which by itself will substantially increase performance..... especially on small gold. There may be other mods the engineers at White's are considering to improve the SL's performance as well. You might want to sit back and wait a bit.........Rob

I'm already using a 4 cell L-ion pack. 16.8 volts with a fresh charge. Steve Howard said that was about all the voltage the SL could handle. Reg had a couple of mods that allowed a faster sweep speed without losing sensitivity on small gold. I've got the writeup on those, just need the right technician to get it done. I was a radar tech in the Air Force, but Reg said it required somebody with experience in current devices.

Hi jim im going into surgery here in a few hours ill have to get back to you next week depending how this goes. Ill let you know the status on the mods for the tdi's after im throuth with this. Hard Prospector sent me a post that the whites engineers are considering making some changes to the tdi sl for better performance. You might call whites and inqui.     Strider55

All the best on your surgery.....I'll add a couple of prayers tonight. I hope Hard is right on Whites improving the SL.

I may have an opportunity to buy a Whites TDI SL with two rechargeable NINH batteries, one AA battery pack, jimmy sierra elliptical dual field mono coil, miner john elliptical waterproof coil, 2 large TDI round open coils, and a Whites padded carry bag/case. Would it be worth buying since I have an Equinox 800 and a Teknetics G2? He's asking $750.

      Just thought I'd post this.............
I now run a 14.8v pack (4 x 18650 cells in series) which gives me a 7 hour run time. My previous version used loose cells in a holder but I wasn't happy with that.
I made up a battery lead that connects directly to the battery compartment contacts with small brass "screw terminal" connectors soldered with 22AWG wire. A bit fiddly to hook up (long and narrow screw driver needed to tighten the two terminal screws) but very secure and + - leads well apart to avoid a short.
I may put in place a rubber divider that further separates the +- battery contacts but the screw connectors are quite secure.
The battery pack fits in snugly and does not move around at all.
I deliberately made the wire lead long enough so the battery can be unplugged with the excess lead bundled inside the battery compartment.

Normally I am not one to watch people taking something out of a box, but these folks do a good job of filming every little part and piece of the Beachhunter TDI....

I thought I'd copy this from my other thread which was buried down on the second page.......is this okay Steve as I don't want to duplicate if unnecessary?
      "Just got back from the beach....in one word.........awesome. Some observations;
It is the deepest detector I have ever used on the beach (in the past 25 years) by running the higher voltage pack.
It is the first time I have ever detected (with any detector, including the Minelab PI's) my gold wedding ring at a measured/buried 18" deep.
The US nickel can be heard at 16" in buried wet sand...but with GB OFF. With GB ON it drops to 12"-13" !
My machine is much deeper with GB OFF across all targets.....the rock solid threshold with GB OFF is unbelievable with no loss of sensitivity.
Even with the coil swept through shallow salt water at max gain and 10us......it is so smooth. I don't know how White's have done it....maybe a new batch of the latest flux capacitors......
I tried with GB on but in clean white sand, there was no perfect GB....it was close but just a slight positive signal as the coil was lowered to the ground...but the depth loss was significant with GB on and slight falsing with higher GAIN. None of this is a problem with GB OFF."
      Tony
PS.......on the real deepies (edge of detectability), there is often a one, two and three way signal but not a four way signal if swept from left, right and up and down.

Well I sat down and re-visited the 4 x 18650 batteries for the TDI Beach Hunter and managed  a successful battery boost.....It's a snug fit but went in better than expected.
Now someone probably has another version but here is my Ghetto version !
I needed to remove most of the White's battery holder to reduce the overall height otherwise the 18650 holder would sit on the floor of the White's holder. All that's really needed is the end part to make the electrical contact.
The two outer batteries are quite secure inside the detector as they snug up against the battery compartment housing.

      1. Cut down AA White's battery holder
      2. Trimmed down 18650 battery holder
      3. Removal of two small plastic tabs from the "roof" of the detector's battery compartment (easy and very neat)
      4. Bit of hot glue to bring the two holders together but doesn't need to be super strong.
      5. Soldering of 18650 leads to contacts on the White's battery holder
And for the record.........the depth increase on my gold ring is a solid 1.5" to 2" over the standard 12v pack. Range has jumped from 14" to 16" with GB off and everything else at max.
