I've found half eagles before.... waiting for the dollar piece and all the others:smile:

I have found three. Two in General Banks Civil War Camps. Hope you find yours. This is my 49th year detecting.

Over 20 years detecting and I have yet to find a gold coin. This past year two friends each found a gold coin. Rarely is it luck George, your research put you on the spot and you made the decision to dig it.. little more than luck! Congratulations on such a beauty

There were several companies that struck coins in areas that had gold.  Federal coins had dates and privately minted coins didn't.

There is a place near me that is an old Adobe  AKA historic site... It's on private property and I can get permission to go to within 100 yards of the property. At any rate the old Adobe was occupied by a Mormon pioneer and I read that they used to have their own money and this place was used as a coin making facility back ion the day. There is also an old site that used to be a casino back in the day...about a half mile away.

I've been detecting many years. I've found my share of silver coins in parks in the 70s and 80s. Haven't done much beach detecting because of geography.  I have found 3 nice 14k wedding bands and a dumpsters worth of trash. You think that if I send you my coil you can rub it on your head and I'll pay the shipping both ways?

Great find and good for you! I never go out looking for something, and never come back disappointed.
