More Gold Prospecting and Rokon Porn...

Recommended Posts

Ivan, that bike is called a Rokon. It's basically a modern day mule. It will carry just about anything you can throw on it. Will go just about anywhere you want to go, and the best of all... you don't have to feed or water it. Makes for the perfect prospecting vehicle.  :D

The Rokons are slick machines, front wheel drive, two wheel drive.

Really cool.

Cool video, but it seems to me that driving offroad and especially cross country is a major league NO NO. Goes totally against the Tread Lightly protocol  to only use existing trails and roads, not to mention the greenies would definitely NOT approve.  Walk the areas that do not have trails !!! Avoid damage to plants and sensitive desert terrain !!! Erosion can be a serious problem from ATV ruts.

I suggest you study up on the laws. When out prospecting, I'm operating under the Federal and AZ state mining laws. Everything I do is perfectly legal. ;)

azblackbird What are you using for a video cam?

It's called a MetroFlash, which is the same as the Polaroid, and Ion, only cheaper. Even though it takes awesome videos that rival the GoPros, the bad thing about these little bullet cams is that they have no external batteries. They're all built-in. Guess what? My battery died on me yesterday, so rather than throw the camera away, I now have to figure out a way to take it apart and unsolder the battery and solder a new one back in. Shouldn't be a problem, but just a pain in the butt to do so.

My suggestion... if you're not handy electronically or mechanically, buy a camera that has an external battery.

TVANWHO. Riding a Rokon off trail is not going to harm the environment one bit! Have you seen the balloon tires on a Rokon, and the fact that it is two wheel drive equates to very little wheel spin so not likely to cause erosion.

In my opinion the environmentalist movement is more about government power and control over the population and limiting individual freedom and liberty than it is about the environment.

Hey mabe erosion from a dirt bike trail somewhere will expose some gold rich bedrock in the next 200 years! Future generations could have some new ground to prospect.

Hmmmm... let's see what does more harm to the environment. Two tires at 4 psi of ground pressure per tire, or a horse with rider at 30 psi of ground pressure per hoof. Me thinks if I was a plant, I'd rather be run over with a 500 lb. Rokon with rider, rather than be stepped on by a 1500 lb. horse with a rider. Of course trying to convince the enviro-whackos differently is a futile process, as they generally lack any sort of common sense.

The following is not directed at anyone in particular. It is just sort of a policy statement for the forum, if you will.

I will out myself. I think we are all responsible for trying to minimise damage to the environment as best we can while undertaking our activities. I am a responsible and environmentally concerned prospector and miner and always clean up after myself and even others. I not only abide by the rules and regulations I go beyond them whenever I can in trying to be a good steward of the land. I also try to comport myself in a professional manner when dealing with others, even those I do not agree with.

Environmental harm is a very relative thing. Intense scrutiny can be placed on something like a small gold dredge, while the very same people who oppose that may be for the construction of a new freeway to shave 15 minutes off getting to work. Like many here I get angry over what I see as unfair restrictions on activities that have minimal or no impact. I have to say I get even angrier when I come across a location where a lazy prospector has left tarps, trash, and broken equipment behind. Sometimes it is hard to know who is actually causing us more harm.

There should not be the perception that we as prospectors do not care about the environment and I would thank everyone to not do anything on these forums at least to feed that perception. There are more than just prospectors and miners reading.

Great video, azblackbird, thanks for posting it. Rock on Rokon! Here I am with a pair of Rokons back in 1993 on a ride with my wife up the Knik Glacier floodplain, Alaska.
