delnorter
Wow, what a great find Ron. An interesting coin: This coin is a new design started in 1834. Congress lowered the weight of all gold coins that year to try to discourage them being melted. This $5 coin was decreased in weight from 8.75 grams to 8.36 grams, consisting of 90% gold and 10% copper. To tell this coin from earlier (heavier) coins the "E Pluribus Unum" was left off the reverse and the liberty cap was removed on the obverse. goldbrick
Congratulations Ron. I was feeling kinda bad for you with your partners killing it, and no love for you. But you were a good sport(unlike some of the Seahawks)through it all. Gotta be karma. Del Norter, That is interesting as I am pretty sure they did the same thing(adding 10% copper) to 1853-1855 seated dimes.
