I Guess I‘m In.. Kind Of Logbook

Recommended Posts

It seems to me the last couple years that making decent jewelry finds has been much more difficult for me. I attributed to a run of poor luck (it happens) but too many other people are reporting the same thing. I think reality is that as we clean up beaches of the good older stuff, that new drops are becoming much fewer both in number and quality. People are both getting smarter about losing jewelry and also switching to types of jewelry that are nearly worthless (titanium, carbide, etc.).

Beach erosion and storm damage has led to a lot of “beach replenishment”.  Older stuff is either washed away or buried.  Another storm and perhaps there’s a new chance.  Still, it’s clear that our old standby, the gold wedding ring is becoming much less the norm.

One possibility is that dedicated gold hunters will get a better PI tool and be able to access older stuff out of reach of current equipment. The bad news is that if that happens, the key word will be dedicated.  Even if usable iron ID is added, lots of deep holes to dig and lots of research and scheduling to get on the right beach at the right tide and perhaps after the right surf conditions.

It is getting harder to find coins an d jewelry.  That's why I focus more on the hunt than the kill (find). Beach hunting for me is relaxation.  Of course I may chase a storm and look for cuts, but since I have limited time at "real" beaches, it is hard to be consistently successful.  However, if it becomes work for the sole pursuit of valuable targets vs. the occasional serendipitous surprise find, then I will take stock in whether I am in it for the joy and relaxation of detecting or the self-imposed stress of producing "results".  I get it it that for many doing the hard work necessary to be repeatedly successful at producing valuable finds, itself can bring joy and satisfaction, that's just not my objective.  I like those surprise finds, valuable or not that make you say to yourself, "how the heck did that get here?"  I do, however, enjoy the detective work that comes with researching the history of sites associated with relic hunting.

Same here chase. It's a fun and hobby thing - finding some clad is a nice add-on

To make things worse, by german law finding a ring doesn't make you the owner. Every item with a value >10€ has to be brought to the lost-property office. If they can't track down the owner, or the owner doesn't fetch his item within 6 month, it's yours (well not yet, if the owner tracks you and his item down withing 3 years, he can demand it back). You get 5% reward for items <500€, for items >500€ additional 3%, but limited to 500€. Since that ring has two names + date engraved, chances I'll get it back are pretty low

Holidays in some states, so I made ~40€ in two hunts:

Nice!

Last hunt I've fiddled with the WM08, therefore lowered the sensitivity and forgot to turn it up again  .. and that after the probably best weekend since owning the nox.. still could kick myself!

Made only 1,xx €, but found a nice chunky 925 silver earring (how ever I made that with sens set to 9):

Different beach today, did only 1,5h and not very thoroughly. Still got ~16€:

I think my clad totals >300€ now, that's 1/3 of the nox buy price.

I went back to the beach I did with sens set to 9. This time I've set it to 18  - only got 1,xx€ ! Okay.. I think someone else is hunting my main beach . The lowered sens even didn't seem to be that big of a deal.

But guess what - I've found another ring:

9B89F89C-1C68-468A-BA66-9B081A365942_zps

It's very thin, 925 silver, missing one stone - but: a ring is a ring

The Nox seems to love silver..!

Edit:

One thing I've forgot to mention: Somebody had lost the lock from his beach chair and asked me if I could help him to find it - it took about 1min - second target = success. That surely raised my karma

This weekend we had a little father and son beach hunt in the early morning. I've let my son take all our findings as pocket money, so it was a no brainer for him to come with me

We had 1,5h and it has been a great experience to hunt in the morning sun, instead of hunting in the evening / night with a head-torch.

13,10€, 1DM, some old coins and a junker - nice!

I've also found a 925 "B" (stands for "Bling") pendant - another Silver!:

Been out yesterday. Besides the usual clad and coins I've found an old navi button:

3 month Equinox 98% beach use roundup

Today I've put together some stuff I've found with the Nox in the last 3 month. Most of the stuff has been pictured in my last posts, anyway

I've counted ~ 400€ worth in clad:

We had execptional good weather the last 2 month, so this doesn't seem to be normal amount you'd expect by any means .. - a friendly detectorist found the same amound with a cheaper machine

The blingy stuff:

Foreign and old coins:

Some buttons:

C0398B08-6EBA-48FC-960D-2A6E6AB96622_zps

10 liters / some kg worth of various trash:

5185F013-6184-43F3-90B8-8FC965797510_zps

... and other not pictured stuff like bullets, spoons, fishing lead, keys, locks, far gone coins ... you name it!

All in all pretty successful. Beeing out veeeeery often and the nice weather surely helped a lot this season. Definitely need to hit the water for some more ring finds.. but wimpy as I am, I suspect that to happen soon

I am still running stock beach1 with changed tone breaks. I might try the park and field modes, but only having ~2h per hunt, doesn't leave much room for experiments and hunts for small jewelry. Nevertheless I sometimes find veeery small stuff pretty deep down.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are some recent 925 silver finds:

9487DADE-8403-4DFD-9EAC-8EDCA07A83A1_zps

I am always amazed, when I find such small pieces of silver - keeping in mind my very high swing speed when coin shooting + running beach1! I wonder how many small gold I left on the beach, because it rings in foil range.. but every time I've dug something in foil range, it has been foil

Yesterday I've found this nice 925 pendant with that super thin chain. I wonder how I managed to dig it, without slicing it up with my scoop:

11A415E3-26F2-46EE-89AA-D7BC5E26E679_zps

Clad totals at nearly 600€ now! ... I think it tributes to the execptional good weather we had for the last 2-3 month.
