The black grains are probably just black sands (magnatite and hematite) that is caught in the pores in the gold, but it could be matrix. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This sort of thing might form when gold-bearing fluids are reduced on reaching a water table low in oxygen.
