I recently obtained permission to detect an 1870's farmhouse property that's never been detected as it's been in the same family since built.  I just got a new Nox 800 to try out today and will be using it with my ctx3030.   I'm looking for any recommendations on a set up/program to use at this old home site for the Nox 800.  Any help is appreciated.

You should see subforum here called Equinox fan club.

Loads of info in the fan club sub-forum.

Pay particular attention to thread at top entitled Equinox essential info.

Park 1 factory settings will get you started.

What you need is a guide for target (coin) ID.

Thx, I will try to find the guide.  I plan on doing some comparisons between the two machines but not sure I'm technically savvy enough to capture it on my phone via video.  No gopro user here yet.  The property has a barn, springhouse and several outbuildings that all date back to 1800's so I'm sure there's a fair amount of trash scattered throughout.  Thx for the help!

Thx I see it now, had to refresh.  Quick question,  how would I know if the unit I just received today has the update or not?

Good question.

My recommendation.

Without hooking detector up to do computer a person can do the following and see if unit has latest version.

Off the top of my head, do the following.

Turn on your unit.

Go to park 2, and scroll over to speed setting and adjust to 1.  Hit detect button.  Next hold the profile button in on right side of unit until you hear a beep.  Then power off unit.  Wait 2seconds.

Power unit back up and push  user profile button on the right side of unit.  Then Scroll over and check and see if unit is set to speed 1setting.  If it is at speed setting 1, very good chance you’re unit has latest and greatest version update.

Someone else may have a better way to identify vs what I have recommended without hooking it up to computer program.

To be 100% certain, there are procedures talked about in this thread here.

Hi Steelhead,

Park 1 is a great suggestion. It will go deep with good separation. The preset sensitivity is 20 out of 25. Depending on the site that might be a bit too high if it is really trashy. Also, if you are looking for iron targets too, you can use the horseshoe button to check for iron and/or notch in a few more minus numbers beforehand. I believe the first audible tone can be heard at +1 in preset Park 1. Even with the stock coil you can get amazing recovery speed and separation with tiny left to right sweeps over your possible target. Test your pinpoint function before you get started to know where the hot pinpoint spot is on the coil. Even with the update mine is still off (to the right) up to about 1" from center sometimes and I still get weak pinpoint sound (ghosting) but a reset of the pinpoint button usually fixes that.

good luck

Jeff

Is there anyone that for any reason still prefers the older version 1.5.0 software over the newer 1.7.5? If so, why? Just curious.

Some folks here may find this interesting, I certainly did!
Testing my equinox 800 in my home test garden today, ground not high on mineralisation, but full of iron, old rusty nails etc.
Had a silver UK sixpence 1930's buried only about 4/5 inches deep iron nails below and all around. (Difficult target)
Imagine a clock face, I'm sweeping from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock , good 2 way tone, no problem, now sweeping from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, 1 way signal, one tone only sweeping from left to right (from 3 o'clock back to 9 o'clock)
Here's the interesting discovery reference ground balance, on my test garden there's so much iron getting a true GB is impossible, when I do try to auto GB it jumps up to the high 90's! However most of my permissions here in the UK read a GB in the mid 40's to the mid 50's so generally that's where I leave my GB most of the time.
Ok GB set at 50, one way target from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, sweeping from 3 back to 9 gives me a one way tone.
Increasing the GB to 90 gave the opposite, still a one way tone, but in reverse ,now sweeping from 9 back to 3,, still a good 2 way tone sweeping from 12 to 6!
Lowering the GB to 75, amazing, perfect 2 way tone, 3 to 9,, and 9 to 3.
Just thought I would share this as I found the results very interesting!
(GB set at 0 gave no tone whatsoever from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock)
Program used field 2 , 50 tones, multi, discrimination -9/+1, iron bias 1, stock 11" coil, sensitivity (tried 17/21 not a great deal of difference)
      Regards Dave. H

I think the lesson to be learnt from this is to buy from Authorized Dealers, and if buying second hand, try verify it's authenticity with original receipts or any way you can.

I read a lot of old mining reports or literature relating to the 1850"s - 1870"s when most of the better gold was won. Sometimes I come across information that is really exciting as you know with cross referencing little was mentioned elsewhere about these finds (nuggets - big nuggets!!) So hopefully few people if any have prospected there.
The only problem is these areas are often almost impenetrable. There either so steep you can barely walk or so over grown trying to get into the area is almost impossible. My biggest fear in these situations is not getting lost but getting bitten by a snake many miles from help. Some of the tiger snakes here even climb trees or lay in the ferns at head height. Which only leaves the winter time to venture in. however during winter the snow is likely going to be a problem. It's really a month or two window of opportunity each year were you have a chance at getting in.
Anyway I've got one gully id like to try (many miles away from any gold workings/activity) but im pretty sure its overgrown with blackberries. I recon it would take a a good mile to even get into this gully from a nearby road. Not to mention hacking away at the blackberries with a machete.
Ive located several areas like this and usually wait for a bush fire or controlled burn to clear the spot but sometimes this dosnt happen.
It almost feels like one has to start looking in areas like this where most rational folk would dare to venture to find areas that haven't had lots of attention these days. Sometimes i wish id chosen another hobby, lol
(Note: I carry a PLB, two way radio, mobile, snake bite kit, lighter, whistle, compass, 2 ltrs water, GPS & spare batteries and sometimes a lever action shotgun for wild dogs. I always communicate exactly where im going and have regular check ins.)
