AT Gold Good In Iron?? Compared To What??

Recommended Posts

I always hear how good the AT GOLD is in the iron wearing the 5x8 coil. My question is compared to what? I put it against 3 other detectors in this video on a very simple test.

The AT Gold sure drags out the iron tone on that nail.  Therein lies the issue with preset recovery speed on a single program, basically a compromise between depth/recovery speed.  At least the Nokta/Makros offer the user a choice of fast or deep programs, and obviously the Nox/Deus offering full adjustability for most scenarios.

You will probably notice that many of the good targets featured on those videos often come up with a blended iron/non-ferrous tones due to not being able to separate out two distinct targets.  Could easily be mistaken for iron wrap-around falsing vs a non-ferrous target coexisting with iron - the result is that they tend to dig all targets just to be sure, which I can't blame them for doing so.

Bottom line is that AT Pro series should be considered more as all-rounder detectors vs the more specialised iron hunters like the Deus and Equinox.  Depth capability isn't always the be all and end all, no point if you cannot hear targets through the first few inches of ground if laden with iron.

Could be a good opening for Garrett to produce a more specialised detector in their lineup for such sites, something to suit the more experienced hunter and offering a bit more adjustability.

They should put some of the marketing money into research and development of a better performing machine. IMO they are the masters of marketing ….Yeah I know the videos your talking about ...

Your test showed exactly why I no longer own an AT Gold! In the goldfields I hunt, hot rocks and leftover mining debris are everywhere and my former AT Gold did not do well separating targets. It was either a constant iron tone barrage or complete nulling out of good targets. That detector should be called the AT Iron.

Unfortunately some people can't tell the difference between trash talking a detector vs providing useful info for those maybe looking to upgrade from an AT series detector, or even just to see how one detector stacks up against another.  How would you ever know if it weren't for such comparisons, the manufacturers certainly aren't going to show any deficiencies in their detectors.

I get so much push back from those types of videos. I guess some of that has t do with me being a in your face type of guy but that is just my personality love it or hate it.  Some want to live in fairy land and pretend like all detectors are good and that we should never say something negative about a brand as that hurts the detecting community.....and I say what kind of bull crap is that???

All detectors are not created equal and we should not dumb down our discussions in fear of some getting their feelings hurt. The greater good will be done when we show this type of stuff to the community. The ones who are serious will take note and investigate and the ones who are not will keep on swinging their machines into detector bliss.

Over on another forum I am getting the usual personal attacks and insults because of this video. They suffer from cognitive dissonance... they really do. Seen the same thing debating with cult members some years back the more you showed them their belief was flawed or wrong the more they tried to disprove what you were saying to the point of coming unhinged. I have had a few come unhinged on me when I showed their precious lacking.

Actually it's probably because of your demeanor and the insulting emoticon's you use on the other site that probably trigger some to respond unfavorably to your accurate observations about the AT gold. I see you are behaving yourself over here however. Keep posting because as you state in the video.....you are a very accomplished detectorist.

You have a NOX 800; why would you want an AT Pro, other than to just have one..?
Curious, is all.. I have an AT Pro.. Really like it a lot.. It's a main machine of mine for where I live.. However, I bought it less than a year before the Equinox series was announced.. If I could have a do-over the day NOX was released I know which machine I would buy to have only one of the two and it wouldn't be an AT Pro.. Not that there's anything wrong with 'em, it's simply because they pale in comparison..
Sooo, it really is a curiosity to me why you want an ATP other than to just have it..? What function can it perform for you the E8 cannot..? This is not a cut or cut-down of any kind, I'd just really like to know / know your thoughts / reasoning..?
