Cal - totally agree with you.  Field detecting time is precious and I loath spending my time on signal comparison testing, but there are times when it makes sense, if for nothing else, dialing in your machine for the site conditions and prevalent target types.  Not sure Field 2 can be improved upon, but what I do is store a version of Gold mode in my user profile so I can compare back and forth.  Now that I have pretty much settled on Field 2 as my relic program, I will probably store that in the UP slot so I can compare it against Park2, Field 1, or Gold as desired.  As far as field 2 is concerned, my only tweaks are deciding on whether or not to use tracking GB and tweaking recovery speed as appropriate for the site conditions (4 or 5 for depth, 6 or 7 for separation).  I switch back and forth between AM (horseshoe button) as I see fit.

Cal and Chase - Unfortunately I haven't used my 800 enough yet to truly be proficient with it.  Nothing will make it rain every day like buying a couple of new detectors.

I have been using Field 1 at the farm (nails, nails, nails) because it runs a little less noisy/hot.  I occasionally will run it in Gold 1 (I like the pitch sound and it really hits hard on those low conductors).  At my less trashy sites I have been running Field 2.  I will likely switch to Field 2 at the farm in the future.

I understand about testing against other machines. When you go long distances to your site you want to get in a quality hunt.

Once again Cal, I am looking forward to your new videos!

HH guys!!

P.S.  Here is a picture of an eroded area at one of my farm sites. Besides the iron, notice the small pieces of lead shot.  The area has been under cultivation since the 1830's.

BTW - Those lead shot pieces sound deep when you hit them.  One dead giveaway is to take a shallow plug and flip it.  If the sound stays in the plug and there is nothing in the hole, you know it is likely shot and can move on instead of wasting time trying to find the shot with your pinpointer.  Of course, if you are trying for small gold...

Thanks!  I will keep that in mind.

Hi Chase,  Yes I agree.  Sometimes my hunt buddy gets too into comparing signals.  I just like to get into my zone and enjoy detecting ?  But yes, I agree, there are definitely times it makes sense, and he's a far more experienced detectorist then I (45 years of experience vs 12).  I'd hoped that he'd take to the Equinox, but sometimes it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks, he quickly sold his Equinox when they first came out to capitalize on the short supply and demand, and just stuck with his Explorer2 after only testing his EQ800 for a couple of days.  Now I cannot argue with his success, but I was hoping he'd take to it, and we could learn from each other.  BUT that's OK.  I'm getting along just fine with my EQ800.  Next month will be a real test for his Explorer2, and to be honest, I expect the EQ800 is going to spank his EXP2 big time ?

I do use the AM/horseshoe button quite a bit to check iffy signals, and at some sites I'll leave it invoked as I want to hear everything to pick out those squeekers in the iron and get a better feel for the site on the Equinox.  If audio fatigue starts to set in, I switch it off.  I don't typically find the EQ to be too noisy (like a F75 for example).

I'll play around with the recovery speed, but Field2 just seems to work everywhere I've hunted without adjustments, and I'm getting DEEP coins and working light to medium density iron with good success.

A bit of iron to contend with eh?  Actually I don't mind the small iron so much, that's easy to get through once you figure it out, but that large iron is an issue with the Equinox.  I've found that something like that large spike will come in as a nickle signal for some off reason.  It doesn't sound as nice as a coin or gold ring would, but then again at these kinds of sites there are many signals that don't sound great due to the amount of junk in the ground.

Large iron wreaks havoc with both my Equinox and Deus.  Large, flat iron is even better.  I use the pinpoint function to trace the profile of large targets so I know what I am getting into, but dig them nevertheless at certain sites as you never know if it's going to be an axe head, hammer, saw, knife, rifle part, sword, bayonet, spur, cannonball, shell, or frag.

I will dig iron on one of my sites hoping for gun tools etc.  My other sites I try to avoid digging iron due to the large amounts of it.
