Hey all,

I'm a newbie here, thinking about getting into this hobby. I have no clue who to trust with my business, for purchasing equipment. So far, I haven't seen any links for website sponsors, if this board even has any.

Who do you folks praise when giving them your business?

There are a few dealers using this forum, they're all honest good guys and I wouldn't hesitate buying from any of them.  A dodgy dealer around here would quickly be shown the door.  I am sure they'll let you know who they are.  The site doesn't run using sponsors in that way, Steve takes it on himself, that in turn it keeps it very honest with no bias towards any brands or dealers.

Be sure to use a dealer who offers field instructions.   Invaluable information.  If it's not against forum policy, I highly recommend Bill Southern of "Nugget Shooters"

The website and forum is beholden to nobody. Anyone can recommend and link to any dealers they like. Unless you just joined to spam this thread... then I will probably delete you and the link!

Don't know where you are from or exactly what you are looking for but http://gerrysdetectors.com in Boise Idaho probably has what you are looking for. Great guy lots of inventory and field training, give him a call and get what you need!

Majority of the dealers sell machines for the same "Low" price as allowed by the manufacturer. I have used different ones and one off ebay that has a regular online store. All treated me well. I would look for who has free shipping and make sure you don't get tagged with a sales tax if your a cheap sob like me.

Ive got all my detectors from Gerry, and did his feild training in nevada. Very glad i did the training as i was very overwhelmed when i first purchased my gpx, and can honestly say i probally wouldnt have been as succesfull without it.

I prefer my local dealer for new detectors. Any trouble with them, any questions, he takes care of it. He is someone I know and have known for years and have complete faith in. I have gotten a couple new detectors from an online dealer, one of them had trouble and it was all down to me. Problems eventually solved by the manufacturer but took weeks, weeks of irritation that my local dealer would have taken care of, and I would not have been paying postage and waiting for response from service people I do not know. Never again with that. Look at prices online, most dealers will match them.

I buy oddball things and used detectors from eBay and other online places, but not new things with a warranty. I have had good luck with eBay and local party sales, but will no longer buy new machines an from online dealer. If you have a local dealer, start with a visit. Costs nothing to talk, and you might find a friend.

Thanks all. I like to ask those in the know on forums like these as opposed to whatever a search engine comes up with.

I'm in the Texas Panhandle. I'm not finding anyone around here that sells equipment. And the 2 local clubs I'm finding may be defunct, as I haven't been able to contact them yet. And given the laws, not looking good for taking up this hobby so far.

I would like to start detecting neighbors property, but I am not sure how to go about it. Does anyone have advice on asking my neighbors(who I don’t know very well) or asking people in different neighborhoods? How do I tell them there yard will not be damaged. I dig my holes in a circle in my grass and pull up the plug. I then check to see if the signal in in the hole or in the plug. Wherever it is I use a t shirt to put the dirt on and find the target. I them spill the dirt in the hole and place the plug back in the way it came out. It does look a bit brown after I do it, but as time goes by you can’t even tell. I did it in my yard lasted year, and this year you can’t even tell. Is this a good way of digging, or is there a better way? Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks!!

Thinking ahead. Will be moving closer to Clearwater and St Pete Beach Florida later this year. What metal detector would you choose for wet sand and shallow wading - an Equinox or Impulse AQ (assuming its available)?. Based on what I have read, it seems Impulse is supposed to find gold rings that Equinox has missed.

I am pretty new to detecting, having used friends detectors from time to time, and am looking to purchase my first detector.  I can get a pretty good deal on either of the two, and am wondering what experienced hobbyists opinions are on which you would buy between the Fisher F5 or Nokta Makro Simplex, and why? Ease of use isn't really a concern as I am confident I can learn to use either.

Hi. I'm new to metal detecting, and have a couple of questions on sharing valuables found in your own neighborhood, I'd appreciate your thoughts on:
1- How do you go about metal detecting in the streets nearby your home, such as, curbside lawn in front of houses, public schools, churches, or local parks?  Any advice?
2- Do you offer or agree on sharing any valuable findings with the property owner beforehand?  Is there a typical percentage?...
Apologies for any inappropriate questions. Thanks in advance for your advice.

      Hi All,
I live in Chicago suburbs, am quite new to the hobby, about to buy my first detector. I did some research and have a few final questions I was hoping you could help me with:
      1. Should I buy Minelab Vanquish 340 or Fisher F22, or do you have a strong suggestion for another model? (Honestly, I'm new to this, I'd like to find gold and historical relics but live in the semi-suburbs and worry about excessive anti-detecting regulations and hostile people)
      2. Pinpointer: are they all the same, or should I stick to top brands like Garret, Mr. Otel or Minelab, even though they are 5x more expensive than copycats on Amazon?
      3. I have a degree in anthropology (though I work in a quite different business field). Does metal detecting lead one to archaeology or numismatics necessarily? Does numismatics help with metal detecting?...

Thanks so much for your insights.
      Tony
