  1. We have a meet every year with approximately 25 prospectors from all over Australia.

  2. I was detecting an old ground sluiced area with the 7000. Lots of exposed bedrock, rock piles and been detected thousands of time with every detector type ever built. The perfect spot for the Z. I had found 3 pretty nice nuggets so I was actually paying attention for a change when I passed my coil over a HUGE rattle snake! It was about 23 feet long, as big around as a utility pole, it's eyes looked like the turn signals on my Jeep, it's fangs looked like two railroad spikes and his rattles sounded like a chin saw. I nearly set a record for the "standing backward broad jump" but lost several points for poor form. I picked up the 7000, my head phones, my pick, my self and my pride and took another look at the rattler. My initial estimate as to it's size was somewhat high but the dang thing was still 4'+. The snakes patron saint (Fredus Masonus) was looking after him and I left him to his claim. That is the first time I have gotten that close to a rattle snake while detecting and, of course, I am blaming the 7000.

  3. Just to be clear; the point of posting the article in the first place was not to politicize it, or make a some sort of greenie statement. It was to inform those of us who may have no idea what is happening in other parts of our world. Here are 2 comments from a related article that IDdesertman posted which sets out a contrast in viewpoints. The discussion is three years old, so obviously nothing much has happened either way. ————————————————————— Environmental Research Dept. • 3 years ago Many countries around the world have this same problem to varying degree's. The big problem is with the large gold companies that own the concessions as they do not want to give the "illegal" miners the proper equipment to extract the gold on their concessions yet the locals have been mining on these properties for hundreds of years and it is their land, the governments are caught between a rock and a hard place. They can't stop the "illegals" from mining but they also can't ask the big gold companies to provide the locals with the proper tools to eliminate mercury use. • Reply • Share › Miro Environmental Research Dept. • 3 years ago Are yo out if your mind? Do yo have idea what you are talking about? I'm a geologist working 16 years for major mining companies here in Peru and all what you are stating in your comment is a pure crap demonstrating you have no idea what you are talking about and you probably never left US o Canada or wherever you are living. This is all about alluvial gold mining genius, none of local or overseas companies are exploiting alluvial gold in Peru at least. Poor illegal miners are hundreds years extracting gold and bad mining companies are throwing them out? What are you living in Inca empire times? These miners are simple bandits, many of them criminals, you should go to their camps and see child prostitution, modern slavery labor, environmental mess you have never seen in your life before and you are defending them? All they do with the monies they make is to drink to death, spend all monies with prostitutes and when they spent it all they will return for more gold. If you would like to see Sodoma Gomorra in your life time you are welcome in Madre de Dios and you are welcome to stay there for while.

  4. I have been lucky enough to tour the White's Electronics facilities myself. Now you can also from the comfort of home! The gentleman conducting the tour is Steve Howard, Marketing Director for White's. Except for the electronic components and some minor parts White's detector are 100% built in the Sweet Home facility. Very impressive when you watch the video from beginning to end. Note to White's - this kind of video and the instructional videos get my attention and possible business (made in USA) far more than banana videos.

  5. A bit of eye candy for you 63g of small bits and a 55g crystalline bit from last weeks trip............used my knowledge of geology to find them pretty decent weeks pay.

  6. There is middle ground between no mining and unregulated mining. It is called responsible mining. We need minerals to sustain our way of life, but let's do it right.

  7. That's for sure... I wouldn't have had a clue.... Made for an all out great experience.. I'm still in shock that I am back here..... especially out trying to drive today--- now these people are on the wrong side of the road!!!!

  8. Very impressive, I never realized how much work is actually done in-house. Many other companies today outsource almost everything and only do the final assembly. White's manufactures a truly American product... One of the best!

  9. There certainly are a number of different viewpoints on this. Some geologist who works for large mining companies no question has a dog in the fight and a strong bias toward the mining companies who would employ him - but often the miners keep them out or require some sort of serious compromise to deal with - so the "criminal" miners directly cost him money. Yup, there is a notable criminal element, and yep a lot of alcohol. Looking at what happened here in the US, it is said that the first 30 men to die in Virginia City were all gunfight injuries, and the number of saloons was astronomical, and there were more than plenty of prostitutes. So Flak says not much has changed in 3 years, heck, not much has changed in 150+ years! The criminals bought off or actually were the criminal element in V.C., so took about 15 years to get enough law abiding citizens to form vigilante groups in V.C. so that they became a scourge to the criminals (and the vigilante groups broke plenty of laws in their own way). (Hey Flak, the VC vigilante groups and their bloody, messy suppression of the criminal elements in VC would make a heck of a movie by the way, so I am offering my services as writer and consultant ). Many of the governments who take the concession money from the mining companies in South America, Africa and elsewhere are little more than a kleptocracy (a government that basically steals from the treasury and transfers the money to personal bank accounts). The mining companies engage in serious bribery to get those concessions, so its not a clear cut situation of who are the good guys and who are the bad. It is unfortunate that the miners insist on using mercury. in many places around the world, both governments and NGOs are working to convince them that the mercury is unnecessary. Other than the mercury, the actual surface disturbance and cutting of trees is pretty minor in the big scope of things.

  10. John Not this Sunday but the next one I'll turn 75 without my play toy. I know as you read this tears is just running down your face.Me no but you got a softer heart than I. Do remember this Sunday is Mothers Day and we all got one. My Mother will turn 94 this year and she looks younger than her son. When I get a hand on my MX Sport that knock at your door will be me. I'm coming over there and dig up every coin in the country. Now that's anyone with a date of two hundred years past. In good heart I can't take them all from you. Here I'm happy just to find a coin over a hundred years pass. I've seen a small commit when some of us talk about a coin we call old. In the northeastern states they do find older coins than I can here in Texas. That's states where America came to be and one can find some old old coins. We got so many great people on here. It's too bad we can't meet face to face but that's not to be. The Best to You Chuck

  13. I did get some nice comments from my friend and others who were highbanking. Working in pairs or three, they would run 40, 50, 60 or more buckets for the same time I worked. They would get more, but again there was 2 or 3 of them working too. My few half buckets of crevice material was pretty rich. Did spend lots of time breaking up pieces of bedrock to extend the reach.

  14. Here's some of the Klamath river gold! A pretty good haul this day. This was from crevicing. It kept getting better the deeper I got down in the crevices. This was in August 2015 and pretty hot. We would leave at daybreak and return to camp about 1 PM. Usually got up over 100 dgs, most days. Happy Camp is a really nice little place. Will definitely return soon and get a New 49ers membership if they ever change the rules back in CA. Seems they have tried to implement more restrictions now that prohibits even highbanking along the river.

  15. Gambler I can say for sure that's the first time I've been called a good egg.Haha Now let me tell you another one for the books. You can go write this down on the bathroom wall and be sure to put the date. Chuck Anders is not trading his MX Sport off for a MXT ALL PRO. Yes you heard right. I'm going to stay with the MX Sport and come hell are high water I'll make it work for me. I know the other detector is great but I just don't like half analog and the other digital. I'm saying it's all are nothing as in digital. I sent the MX Sport back for the firmware update today and they will have it in their hot little hands by Tuesday of next week. The best to you Gambler Chuck

  16. I don't know if something has been said about this but I am. One of the big things going for the MX Sport is it's all digital and I know that's why I like my Eagle 2 so much. Too many times I've been nugget hunting and look down to find one of my knobs is off.on my PI detector. The headphone cord is the cause of this trouble most of the time but it leaves you wondering just how long has it been that way. Over time a knob can get off by just hitting your detector on your leg. It will get off by setting it down hard on the ground. Just any kind of shock to the detector will cause the knobs to turn some as it get age on it You may know the fix but I'll tell you anyway. Buy some small O-Rings and put one under each knob so it will drag on the O-Ring as you turn it. It's too bad that couldn't be a fix for us as we get older. For me I wish all detectors would be digital. You look at the MX Sport face I don't see anyway dirt could get into it. I'd think it would be easy to may one that's digital waterproof than one with all the knobs sticking out. I know it's detector out there that have all kind of knobs on them and work great in water. The sun and age affect us all and it will them too. Don't let my trouble I've had cause you not to buy the MX Sport. I've been known to be wrong but I think my first detector had trouble other than the firmware update. Then I get the second one and it didn't have the firmware update too. Things can happen to a person one has no control over but that's okay I'm still waking up on the green side of the grass. Chuck

  17. Are there any bad ways to mine, or is it all "fair game" as long as minerals are being extracted for the cause of human development? I agree, it's more than a bit hypocritical for us here in the US to scold 3rd world countries about deforestation when we already did (a few hundred years ago) clear cutting and plowing that changed the natural landscape, so we already had our turn, so to speak. Completely unregulated mining that pollutes drinking water with mercury, I'm not sure I can rationalize that to myself by saying that they will appreciate it when they have all the luxuries that come along with it. Here's another article about mining in Peru I found on Mining.com. It's certainly not just the liberals and greenies who are reporting on this stuff. http://www.mining.com/mercury-pollution-linked-to-illegal-gold-mining-in-peru-reaches-lethal-levels-73281/

  18. Not a live forum I like how you control the content by only having 1 active forum and then you move the good relevant info into the appropriate reference area, I like how you have set yours up Steve as you do not have to wade waist deep through crap to find relevant info. I just feel that geology is one of the most important parts of prospecting and it deserves its own reference section. I'dd contribute some really good links.

  19. Chris, you couldn't have said it better. I'll bet the London area used to be a beautiful forested area, now its 100% City. Same thing with many other parts of the world. Farming have removed more habitat than any other industry, and for good reason, to sustain the population.

  20. I have a very different take on this. We live in cities formed by leveling forests, tearing down mountains of building stone, destroying animal habitats and draining lakes and wet lands. The poverty stricken residents of these lands want a better life for themselves and their children. Why is it a horrible environmental tragedy that these people want to develop their natural resources and develop a better life? It is EXACTLY what we have done. Unless you are living the total technology and lifestyle of 500 BC., you are a hypocrite to deny these people the opportunity to better their lives the way our forefathers did. I can tell you as a writer and some one who has long been involved in environmental issues that articles like this are pure propaganda pieces which ignore the facts to gain converts and donations.

  21. Paul I just got on here to see if you made it back. If not I was going to tell you to come home while some gold is left. It sounds like you had a great time and that is half of the trip. Finding gold and being out there with Big John is got to be the best half. To me renting a detector would be the best way to go. Taking yours and getting there and it not working would make a grown man cry. Glad you made it home safe without a snake hanging off your leg. Chuck
