  1. Purchased a GPX- 4500 package and an additional 12" round NF Evolution coil from Chris at AZO and took it for it's maiden run today. It was toasty in Central AZ today but I just had to give the new set up a go for a few hours. Not a bad first run... scored three little nugs. Totally HOT set up. Dean

  2. Strick, I was using the stock coil. The 18k gold bracelet iD'd at 12.02...it was low "grunt". The other gold rings iD'd at 12.10 - 12.17. Hit another beach yesterday for 5 hours. 18k gold ring with diamonds, 14k gold ring with emerald & diamonds and 7 silver rings. Plus a tremendous amount of coins....over $50!! . The digging was fast and furious! All found in the wet sand and surf.

  3. Picked up a new White's Treasure Pro for my wife Carla. Very happy with the quality and simplicity of the unit. For 360.00 shipped you can't go wrong, it's light, has auto ground tracking or lock track, backlight display and a 10"DD coil and takes 2 AA batteries . I was playing with it yesterday and it is pretty impressive. Dime at 7" Quarter at 8" not an issue. And no how do I .......this again from Carla! Every ones happy.

  4. This thread is so people don't think metal detecting is just digging good stuff. I do a lot of detecting where I just toss stuff in a pile for sorting later. Time to clean house so here are a few piles and some notes. First up - learning session with Minelab GPZ 7000 at Lake Tahoe beach. Fresh water lake but very mineralized beaches, loaded with magnetite sands and hot rocks. Just digging everything, and did find a ring, but just a little silver one with fake stones. Basically coins except nickels and zinc pennies go lo-hi tone. Only other lo-hi tones normally nails. Everything else hi-lo tones. First photo the pile, next photo sorted out so you can see most common trash items. Call this BEACH TRASH Next up mostly stuff found nugget detecting, but also some park detecting snuck into that pile. The sorted pile shows trash you might find nugget detecting. Nuggets of course got pocketed as found so nothing to show there. Call this NUGGET DETECTING TRASH. Extra photo showing volume of small trash targets not worth trying to sort out.... And finally some park detecting with various detectors, mostly DFX and Gold Racer plus Racer 2 and Deus. I am digging a lot of trash items for educational/learning purposes while comparing machines. The sorted pile only shows common trash; I discarded all the weird stuff. Call this PARK TRASH. Anyway, I hope this shows that it is not all digging "good stuff" and also an idea what the most common trash items are for people who have not done this sort of thing before.

  11. Biological indicators can and can't be present for gold deposits. It is all a matter of percentage and perception. How many times is an indicator right and how many times is it wrong? We hunt in an area in southern California that has a yellow flower. The flower is not everywhere but it is on about half of the land. This flower is said to grow (only or best --- depending upon the prospector) where there is iron/ironstone. (It is easy to see when it blooms after a rain.) Where there is ironstone there can be gold. There can also be gold that has moved from these areas. Not all ironstone areas have gold. Much of the area has been pushed and natural soils have been modified. Should one only hunt where you find these yellow flowers? Is there a better chance of finding gold where you find these yellow flowers? One thing for sure ... gold is where you find it. If you are a hunter who only hunts when he sees the yellow flowers then that is your biological indicator. Go for it. You will be leaving all the other gold for someone else. You mentioned the trees. Maybe the tree grows better when it has a deep soil. Maybe an area of deep soil will hold gold that has moved in and settled there. If it is a gold vein source of gold it may be just a coincidence or the gold vein has been hidden all of these years by gravel covering it. There may be a successful pattern out there following a biological indicator. It may be better or worse than other methods. Most successful gold prospectors have one thing in common and that is that they spend a lot of time at it. I on the other hand have been lucky! Mitchel

  12. Sounds interesting... bobcat tracks are usually rounded with no claw marks, coyote tracks are more oblong and almost always show claw marks, bear tracks are usually triangular and show claw marks... the only track with three big toes might be an odd type of bigfoot... just teasing, I have never seen a three toed mammal track... fred

  14. As long as the discrimination function comes as a firmware update and not another $10k machine

  15. HI Mitchel Like you my ctx is my main squeeze....I've only had it a couple years now but have a basic understanding of it's functions. To hopefully help with your questions: 1. Yes to edit a pattern just hit the accept/reject button when you find a target you don't want and it will make a square (size depending on what you have pre-chosen) . 2. It definitely effects the "receive function" of the machine... 3. The bigger the edit square size the more sound (target id) it blocks out... 4. Yes it will effect the tone of the sounds that you hear. The smaller the square size the less it effects the tone. In my case I have a program that I really like called "Doc's Ferrous coin" I use it in combined mode. It used to be on the Findmall CTX site. The program in it's discrimination pattern will virtually eliminate most pop off bottle caps. It does detect twist off bottle caps. I wanted it to reject zinc pennies so I started notching them out with the edit function. Problem with the Zinc Pennies as you have mentioned is that they can ring in anywhere in the dig-able range of good targets. I've found that notching out stuff does nothing but reduce the size of my treasure chest. strick

  16. Mitchel; I think you are missing out by not using the f/c numbers as an aid...for common coins, especially old coins I find the numbers very helpful. I have considered building a program by finding and editing every junk item I find. To do that I would use the smallest square...however, after a days detecting I think the sceen would be mostly blocked...no good to be found there... You are correct on the worthless zinc curse...what a waste of money-two cents to make a penny that will corrode over night...the epitome of government waste!
